Up Jumped Spring
Composition by Freddie Hubbard
The year is 1967. Ronald Reagan is inaugurated as new the Governor of California. Jimi Hendrix releases his iconic “Are You Experienced” album. Jim Morrison and The Doors mock the censors on the “Ed Sullivan Show”. And the Vietnam war is in full swing.
Against this backdrop of turmoil and change, trumpeter and composer Freddie Hubbard releases one of his greatest albums, the seminal recording entitled “Backlash”. Regarded by many as the greatest trumpeter of the ’60’s and ’70’s, Freddie Hubbard varied his repertoire and penned the lilting and lyrical tune “Up Jumped Spring” as an ode to the joy and wonder of springtime.
Echoes of the great Freddie Hubbard can be heard today in the virtuosic playing and recordings of Hartford-schooled trumpeters Josh Bruneau, Josh Evans, John Hasselback III, Haneef Nelson, and Ricky Alfonso. These and many other gifted area musicians have played in countless Hartford Jazz Society events, including our long-running Paul Brown concert series in Bushnell Park, our Monday night series at Black Eyed Sally’s, and our annual Spring and Fall concerts.
