SUMMARY:Dr. Julian's YES YES
DESCRIPTION:Julian Gerstin (percussion)\, Jason Robinson (sax)\, Paul Austerlitz (bass clarinet)\, Don Anderson (trumpet)\, Andrew Wilcox (piano)\, Wes Brown (bass)\, Ben James (drums) \nYes to jazz\, yes to world music. Yes to tradition\, yes to new ideas. Yes to sophistication\, yes to funk. Original music steeped in jazz and sparkling with rhythms and instruments from the Caribbean\, Eastern Europe and the Arabic world. Melodic and driving\, thoughtful but audience-friendly. Dr. Julian’s Yes Yes has it both ways. \nJulian Gerstin\, percussion\, composer\, is a veteran of many jazz\, African and Latin bands. He has appeared with jazz icons Sheila Jordan and Charles Neville; Afropop stars Orlando Julius\, Baba Ken Okulolo and Zulu Spear; and has also worked in Eastern European and Arabic music\, punk\, funk\, choral music\, and theater composition. In addition to the Sextet\, Julian currently leads the Brazilian group Sambaganza and performs traditional Puerto Rican drumming with Bomba de Aquí. Much of Julian’s music stems from his two years living in Martinique\, studying and performing traditional music. Julian has an MFA in Music Composition and\, yes\, a PhD. \nWith Yes Yes\, Dr. Julian takes a step beyond his previous group\, the JG Sextet. That group released its third CD\, Songbirds of the Deep Sea\, on Truth Revolution Records in 2025\, but already Julian was looking for musicians to treat his compositions more adventurously\, as starting points rather than finished works. The personnel of Yes Yes is flexible\, but all of the musicians enjoy taking chances. Current members include: \nJason Robinson\, saxophones\, works primarily with his group the Janus Ensemble\, which includes Liberty Ellman\, Angelica Sanchez and Ches Smith\, among others. The group has released four CDs of Jason’s socomplexly beautiful compositions. He has appeared with George Lewis\, Anthony Davius\, Myra Melford\, Rudresh Mahanthappa\, Raphe Malik\, Toots and the Maytals\, and numerous other contemporary jazz and world music luminaries. Jason is a professor of music at Amherst College. \nPaul Austerlitz\, bass clarinet\, is one of the country’s leading jazz voices on his instrument. Paul’s travels have taken him to the Dominican Republic and Haiti\, where he worked in numerous top bands. He composes and performs with his own group\, Voudou Jazz. As a scholar\, Paul has published books on Black and Diasporic music and Dominican merengue. \nDon Anderson\, trumpet\, is a veteran of numerous groups including the Vermont Jazz Center Big Band\, Zara Bode Little Big Band\, Green Street Quintet\, Dr. Burma\, and New England Transcendental Brass Band.  \nAndrew Wilcox\, piano\, is the group’s youngest member. A protegé of Grammy Award-winning pianist Zaccai Curtis\, Andrew is quickly establishing himself as a rising star in both jazz and Latin music circles. \nWes Brown\, bass: Wes’s first professional gig\, at the age of eighteen\, was two years on the road with jazz legend Earl “Fatha” Hines. He has since worked with luminaries Wadada Leo Smith\, Anthony Davis\, Marilyn Crispell\, Fred Ho\, and numerous others.   \nBen James\, drum set: Ben’s credits include work with John Tchicai\, Olatunji\, Green Mountain Mambo\, and others.

SUMMARY:Bill Charlap Trio
DESCRIPTION:A Grammy Award winning pianist and one of the true masters of the American songbook brings his trio to The Side Door for four unforgettable \n\n\n\n\nBill Charlap – Piano\nDavid Wong – Bass\nDennis Mackrel – Drums \nBill Charlap was born in New York City into a deeply musical family\, his father was Broadway composer Moose Charlap\, whose credits include Peter Pan\, and his mother is singer Sandy Stewart\, a Grammy nominated vocalist who toured with Benny Goodman. Charlap began playing piano at age three and never looked back. In the late 1980s he joined Gerry Mulligan’s quintet\, and in 1995 secured one of the most coveted piano chairs in jazz with the Phil Woods Quintet. Since then he has performed with an extraordinary range of the music’s leading artists\, including Tony Bennett\, Wynton Marsalis\, Ron Carter\, Dee Dee Bridgewater\, Houston Person\, and Barbra Streisand. \nCharlap is widely regarded as one of the most gifted interpreters of the American songbook working today. Time magazine has written that he “approaches a song the way a lover approaches his beloved\, no matter how imaginative or surprising his take on a song is\, he invariably zeroes in on its essence.” His acclaimed trio\, celebrated for its telepathic interplay and deep swing\, has been together for decades and has released nearly 20 albums together. In 2016\, his collaboration with Tony Bennett\, The Silver Lining: The Songs of Jerome Kern\, won the Grammy Award for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album. From 2004 through 2023 he served as Artistic Director of New York City’s Jazz in July Festival at 92NY\, and he currently serves as Director of Jazz Studies at William Paterson University. \nJoining him for this special four night engagement are bassist David Wong and drummer Dennis Mackrel\, two of the most respected rhythm section players in jazz. This is a rare and extraordinary opportunity to experience one of the true masters of jazz piano in an intimate setting. \nThe Side Door Jazz Club is a dedicated jazz listening room located inside the historic Old Lyme Inn\, 85 Lyme Street\, Old Lyme\, CT. Tickets are reserved seating. Guests dining at the Old Lyme Inn prior to the show receive 10% off their dinner bill.
