SUMMARY:Tuxedo Junction
DESCRIPTION:For over 24 years\, hosting public rehearsals every Monday night\, now at Guilford VFW Post 7666. \nTuxedo Junction was started in 1989 by Pete Jacobs (trumpet) and Will Tayler (drums)\, WWII veterans who set up an 8-piece Dixieland jazz band in the basement of the senior citizens center in Madison\, CT. Pat soon joined on piano. \nThe band quickly grew into a full swing band as Pete added big band arrangements and people joined: everyone from high school students to retired music teachers started to fill out the sections. Tuxedo Junction moved its practice home to the Westbrook Elks briefly\, and in 1997 Paul James suggested that Bill’s Seafood restaurant in Westbrook would be a great place to share the sounds of swing. After more than 20 years of Monday nights at Bill’s\, originally outnumbering the customers and staff before turning it into the most happening place on the Shoreline for a Monday night\, we moved outside to Town Greens\, Overlook Farm in Killingworth\, and the Guilford VFW. \nTuxedo Junction plays original big band arrangements from the 30’s through the present\, including charts from Count Basie\, Duke Ellington\, Glenn Miller\, Sy Zentner\, Buddy Rich\, Frank Sinatra\, Ella Fitzgerald\, and more. We focus on danceable tunes from swing to waltz\, foxtrot to two-step\, Latin and even some rock. The band has weekly open rehearsals at local venues on the Eastern Connecticut shoreline. The public is invited to dance and listen in at no charge. We are also available for hire at public and private events throughout Connecticut. \nAfter more than 1\,001 performances\, Tuxedo Junction has become a musical success story. We are now eighteen passionate musicians\, men and women of all ages\, following the great jazz tradition and warmly welcoming visiting jazz musicians to sit in.

SUMMARY:Fridays with Frank
DESCRIPTION:Join renowned jazz historian and Jazz Haven Board member Frank Cochran for BYOB “Fridays with Frank.”  Happy Hour jazz listening sessions are held every Friday from 5:15 to 7:00 pm at the Institute Library in downtown New Haven.  Each Friday Frank selects iconic jazz LPs to play from the Library’s extensive collection.  Discussion follows.  BYOB and please give a modest donation towards the IL’s spiraling utilities. A $5.00 contribution is welcome. \nThis Friday\, December 12th\, Frank will feature the music of Lee Konitz. Between the 1940s and his death at 92 in 2020\, Konitz played with most everyone\, and made records with most. From the 1949 Birth of the cool\, a long though intermittent association with Lennie Tristano\, gigs with Gerry Mulligan\, Jimmy Giuffre\, Harold Danko in the 1980s\, and Warne Marsh in the 90s\, he was constantly showing up on LPs\, always with an intellectually relaxed sound like no one else. Even when Elvin Jones was the drummer. We’ve got a bunch of his records; you will\, Frank believes\, be in for a treat because there will be at least one you’ve never heard.

SUMMARY:Yoko Miwa Trio
DESCRIPTION:Miwa performs with her trio featuring bassist Matt Stavrakas and drummer Scott Goulding. \nMiwa’s musicianship evokes the harmonic finesse and rhythmic brilliance of key influences like Bill Evans\, Keith Jarrett\, McCoy Tyner and Oscar Peterson. Her expansive\, versatile writing presents both a remarkable ear for melody and an earthy\, intuitive feel for groove. As a bandleader\, Miwa heads one of the finest jazz trios playing today. In his 4-star DownBeat review of Miwa’s 2019 release Keep Talkin’\, Carlo Wolff noted “the blend of intimacy and power this unusually gifted trio can muster.” \nInternationally acclaimed pianist/composer Yoko Miwa is one of the most powerful and compelling performers on the scene today. Her trio\, with its remarkable telepathy and infectious energy\, has brought audiences to their feet worldwide. Their 2021 release Songs of Joy received wide acclaim and reached #1 on national jazz radio charts. Jazziz called it “a radiant new collection.” Her 2019 CD\, Keep Talkin’\, showcases Miwa’s fine playing and artful compositions and the trio’s uncanny musical camaraderie. DownBeat gave the recording four stars\, calling it “a beautifully constructed album” and noting “the drive and lyricism of a pianist and composer at home in bebop\, gospel\, pop\, and classical.” For more than a decade Miwa’s trio has played regularly at major jazz clubs in their home city of Boston\, as well as venues around the world. A favorite of Jazz at Lincoln Center\, Miwa was chosen to play on “Marian McPartland & Friends\,” part of the Coca-Cola Generations in Jazz Festival. Miwa also appears regularly at New York’s famed Blue Note Jazz Club as well as Birdland and has performed and/or recorded with a wide range of jazz greats including Sheila Jordan\, Slide Hampton\, Arturo Sandoval\, George Garzone\, Jazzmeia Horn\, Jon Faddis\, Jerry Bergonzi\, esperanza spalding\, Terri Lyne Carrington\, Kevin Mahogany\, John Lockwood and Johnathan Blake\, among others.

SUMMARY:sinonó
DESCRIPTION:isabel crespo pardo (voice)\, Lester St. Louis (cello)\, Henry Fraser (bass) \n“It’s an astonishing blend of the lyric and the austere\, with time stretched like taffy\, […] utterly devastating in its meticulously sculpted intensity”— Peter Magarsak for The Wire Magazine \n“A kind of expressionist fado\, middle-of-the-night music\, comfortable in the deep surrounding darkness\, but also an “offering” that bends towards an oncoming light without betraying that it really is coming”— Piotr Orlov for Dada Strain \nExplosive and wistful\, sinonó draws on Latin American folk and free improvisation to create a space of crackling aliveness. Described as “middle-of-the-night music” (Dada Strain)\, the trio features vocalist and composer isabel crespo pardo\, cellist Lester St. Louis\, and bassist Henry Fraser. Together\, they perform crespo’s “poemsongs” – pieces built around metaphor and improvisation that shift in performance\, but always remain tied to poetry and breath. sinonó has performed at venues such as Roulette Intermedium\, The DiMenna Center\, and Lincoln Center Atrium\, and their debut album la espalda y su punto radiante (Subtext Recordings) released in Spring 2024. They will record their sophomore album this Fall at Pioneer Works (Brooklyn\, NY). \nla espalda y su punto radiante is a collection of poem-songs spun out of solitude. Performed by sinonó\, Crespo’s compositions live in familiar yet surprising environments\, crackling with aliveness. The trio is pulled into the trying\, harboring a faith in interconnectivity\, impulse and imperfection. A patient listen\, this music enlivens unknowing in all its devastating urgency and unfettered curiosity. \nisabel crespo pardo (they/them) is a NYC-based latinx vocalist\, improviser-composer\, and interdisciplinary artist. Recent evening length works include Mighty Angel…come down clothed in rainbow-head (2024)\, an experimental play co-created and performed with Anna Abondolo. This performance piece exhibits the tension between our hopeful and despondent tendencies via voice\, plucked strings\, fixed media\, sculpture\, and haunting monologues. In November 2022\, crespo premiered 6.\, a six-week interdisciplinary installation piece performed by crespo and five close collaborators\, making use of screen printing\, sculpture and sound to activate contemplation of community and improvisation.  In June 2022\, they premiered drip\, drip\, a co-created site-specific piece with edi kwon in the catacombs of the Green-Wood Cemetery.  Inspired by this historic space and sharing in each other’s grief and light\, the duo crafted a ritual of transformation through improvisation\, movement\, poetry\, and the use of found objects. In May 2022\, they premiered desbordándome\, a large-scale embroidered graphic score composed for sinonó exploring themes of change\, interconnectedness\, and failure\, as well as the expressive and sonic potential of words.

SUMMARY:Benny Benack III Quartet: Season's Swingin' Greetings
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special night of jazz with Trumpeter/Vocalist Benny Benack III and his Quartet! \nBenny Benack III – Trumpet/Vocals \nTyler Henderson – Piano \nAlex Claffy – Bass \nElio Coppola – Drums \nEmmy-nominated Trumpeter and Vocalist Benny Benack III (BBIII) has quickly become a leading voice in Jazz for his generation\, headlining clubs and festivals around the world on the heels of his latest critically acclaimed live album “This Is The Life\,” which has been garnering thousands of streams and topping the JazzWeek Radio Charts. He is the rare talent who is formidable as a fiery trumpeter — ranging from Freddie Hubbard to Louis Armstrong and everyone in between — while as a singer he delivers sly\, mature\, naturally expressive post-Sinatra vocal stylings. \nHis sophomore album “A Lot of Livin’ to Do” (2020) featured the likes of bass luminary Christian McBride\, achieving viral online fame w/his vocalese rendition of “Social Call\,” ft. Veronica Swift\, which has been transcribed and covered by singers around the world. He has crooned his way to millions more listeners alongside groups such as the Grammy-winning “8-Bit Big Band” and YouTube sensation “Postmodern Jukebox”. His 2023 album “Third Time’s the Charm” went all the way to #2 on the charts\, and featured a notable line-up of special guests such as Peter Bernstein\, Bria Skonberg\, Chad LB\, and more. \nBenny’s double-threat credentials were first apparent when he was a finalist in the 2014 Thelonius Monk Competition on trumpet\, before going on to win Third Place in the 2021 Sarah Vaughan Vocal Competition. His resume for both was recently bolstered by Downbeat Magazine’s Readers Poll for 2025\, where he placed #1 for Rising Star Male Vocalist\, and was also #8 for Rising Star Trumpet. \nBBIII’s global recognition has been bolstered by his collaborations with the GRAMMY-award winning “8-Bit Big Band\,” as well as touring with Postmodern Jukebox. The recent advent of live-streaming concerts has also proved a boon\, both through his residency at Smalls Jazz Club\, and frequent appearances at fellow superstar Emmet Cohen’s “Emmet’s Place” online series. Benny has established himself as one of the most in-demand touring artists and music educators in the Jazz world\, with a seemingly unending intercontinental schedule reflecting his indefatigable love for the music\, and with his smile and panache ever on display wherever he goes.

SUMMARY:Allen Lowe & The All-Stars
DESCRIPTION:Acclaimed jazz saxophonist Allen Lowe leads the monthly Jazz Night at Best Video Film & Cultural Center. Allen Lowe & The All Stars consists of a coterie of musical guests including Gary Grippo on guitar\, Jeff Fuller on bass\, Barry Ries on drums and trumpet\, and Mark Kaplan on tenor sax.  Join them in a relaxed setting with tables and chairs to truly sit back\, relax\, and enjoy the great vibe. The BVCoffee Bar will be open for beer\, wine\, and café drinks. \nAllen Lowe is a composer\, saxophonist\, and music historian. He was voted Artist of the Year in the 2021 Jazz Times Readers’ Poll. He has recorded as a leader with: Julius Hemphill\, Gary Bartz\, Marc Ribot\, David Murray\, Nels Cline\, Matt Shipp\, Roswell Rudd\, Don Byron\, Doc Cheatham\, and others. \n“This fall\, the jazz composer\, saxophonist\, and music historian Allen Lowe released what I consider to be his magnum opus\, a four-cd set containing 69 tracks exploring almost every musical element and style that could be subsumed under the expansive rubric of “jazz.” One can hear elements of blues\, R&B\, bop\, funk\, rock\, punk\, avant guard\, and much more\, all beautifully composed and magnificently played (by Lowe himself and his colleagues). I’ve been digesting this music slowly\, gradually\, and repeatedly\, and it just sounds better with each listen. It’s Allen’s unequaled grasp of the entire history of American music that emerges in such idiosyncratic and creatively beautiful ways throughout this collection. I can’t think of anyone else who could have pulled off such a remarkably ambitious undertaking. He is a genius\, without question.” -Professor Jon Karp\, SUNY Binghamton

SUMMARY:Big Bad Voodoo Daddy's Wild and Swingin' Holiday Party
DESCRIPTION:Since its formation in the early nineties in Ventura\, California\, the band has toured virtually nonstop\, performing on average over 150 shows a year\, and has produced a sizable catalog of recorded music\, with sales of over two million albums to date. Early on\, during their legendary residency at the Derby nightclub in Los Angeles\, they reminded the world\, in the midst of the Grunge era no less\, that it was still cool to swing. The band\, co-founded by singer Scotty Morris and drummer Kurt Sodergren\, was at the forefront of the swing revival of that time\, blending a vibrant fusion of the Classic American sounds of Jazz\, Swing\, and Dixieland\, with the energy and spirit of contemporary culture. \nAfter over 30 years\, 11 records\, over 3000 live shows\, and countless appearances in film and television\, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy is showing no signs of slowing down\, and is looking forward to sharing its music with new and old fans alike. \nWolf Den
