SUMMARY:Benny Green Solo Piano
DESCRIPTION:A true torchbearer of the jazz piano tradition comes to The Side Door for an intimate evening of solo piano \n\n\n\n\nBenny Green – Solo Piano \nBenny Green is one of the most exciting\, hard-swinging pianists to emerge from the legacy of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers. Born in New York and raised in Berkeley\, California\, Green began classical piano studies at age seven\, drawn to jazz through his father’s record collection of Monk and Bird\, and his early talent led to a weekly trio gig at Yoshi’s while still in high school. \nAfter moving to New York\, Green studied with veteran pianist Walter Bishop Jr.\, who encouraged him to explore the full scope of jazz piano history to find his own voice. He went on to work with Betty Carter from 1983 to 1987\, then realized a lifelong dream by joining Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers\, remaining a member until Blakey’s passing in 1990. He went on to join Freddie Hubbard’s quintet\, and in 1993 became the first recipient of the City of Toronto’s Glenn Gould International Protégé Prize in Music\, selected personally by Oscar Peterson. That same year he joined Ray Brown’s trio\, remaining until 1997. \nGreen has been hailed as the bearer of a torch handed down to him personally by his mentors\, Betty Carter\, Art Blakey\, Freddie Hubbard\, and Ray Brown\, a living link to one of the great lineages of jazz piano. With a recording career spanning over one hundred sessions as both leader and sideman\, and decades of touring as a soloist and bandleader\, Green brings the full weight of that tradition to The Side Door for two nights of solo piano\, an intimate format that allows his extraordinary touch\, harmonic depth\, and hard-swinging spirit to take center stage. \nThe Side Door Jazz Club is a dedicated jazz listening room located inside the historic Old Lyme Inn\, 85 Lyme Street\, Old Lyme\, CT. Tickets are reserved seating. Guests dining at the Old Lyme Inn prior to the show receive 10% off their dinner bill.

SUMMARY:Tuxedo Junction
DESCRIPTION:For over 24 years\, hosting public rehearsals every Monday night\, now at Guilford VFW Post 7666. \nTuxedo Junction was started in 1989 by Pete Jacobs (trumpet) and Will Tayler (drums)\, WWII veterans who set up an 8-piece Dixieland jazz band in the basement of the senior citizens center in Madison\, CT. Pat soon joined on piano. \nThe band quickly grew into a full swing band as Pete added big band arrangements and people joined: everyone from high school students to retired music teachers started to fill out the sections. Tuxedo Junction moved its practice home to the Westbrook Elks briefly\, and in 1997 Paul James suggested that Bill’s Seafood restaurant in Westbrook would be a great place to share the sounds of swing. After more than 20 years of Monday nights at Bill’s\, originally outnumbering the customers and staff before turning it into the most happening place on the Shoreline for a Monday night\, we moved outside to Town Greens\, Overlook Farm in Killingworth\, and the Guilford VFW. \nTuxedo Junction plays original big band arrangements from the 30’s through the present\, including charts from Count Basie\, Duke Ellington\, Glenn Miller\, Sy Zentner\, Buddy Rich\, Frank Sinatra\, Ella Fitzgerald\, and more. We focus on danceable tunes from swing to waltz\, foxtrot to two-step\, Latin and even some rock. The band has weekly open rehearsals at local venues on the Eastern Connecticut shoreline. The public is invited to dance and listen in at no charge. We are also available for hire at public and private events throughout Connecticut. \nAfter more than 1\,001 performances\, Tuxedo Junction has become a musical success story. We are now eighteen passionate musicians\, men and women of all ages\, following the great jazz tradition and warmly welcoming visiting jazz musicians to sit in.

SUMMARY:New Haven Improvisers Collective workshop
DESCRIPTION:The New Haven Improvisers Collective meets every month to explore the nexus of improvisation across all genres of music. Our workshops are open to anyone who’s interested – from sqronking saxophonists to knob-twisting laptop rockers; our members have improvised on everything from vocals to theremins to African drums (and yes\, we actually had these last two jamming together at a workshop – and it was awesome!) The New Haven Improvisers Workshop is a great place to network with like-minded musicians\, to test out new composition ideas\, and to learn to play your instrument in new ways. We get a few new faces every time\, so come on down! You don’t need to be able to read music to be able to play! All you need is a pair of ears and a sense of adventure. \nThe Collective meets on the last Monday of every month at 810 State St.\, New Haven\, CT.

SUMMARY:Aaron Goldberg Trio w/ Matt Brewer & Kendrick Scott
DESCRIPTION:One of jazz’s most compelling pianists brings his celebrated trio\, featuring Matt Brewer and Kendrick Scott\, to The Side Door \n\n\n\n\nAaron Goldberg – Piano\nMatt Brewer – Bass\nKendrick Scott – Drums \nThe New York Times has called Aaron Goldberg a “post-bop pianist of exemplary taste and range”\, and over a career spanning three decades he has more than earned that distinction. Born in Boston\, Goldberg discovered jazz in high school under the guidance of bassist Bob Sinicrope\, and later studied with saxophonist Jerry Bergonzi before moving to New York at seventeen to attend the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music. DownBeat magazine has praised his “quick witted harmonic reflexes\, fluid command of line\, and cut-to-the-chase sense of narrative logic.” \nGoldberg’s career has placed him at the center of some of jazz’s most important collaborations. He toured extensively with Joshua Redman\, joined the bands of Kurt Rosenwinkel and Wynton Marsalis\, and performed worldwide with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra. He has also collaborated with Charles Lloyd\, Madeleine Peyroux\, Betty Carter\, Freddie Hubbard\, and Guillermo Klein\, among many others\, and somehow found time to earn a master’s degree in philosophy from Tufts along the way. He is a Steinway artist and a member of the celebrated collaborative trio Yes! with Omer Avital and Ali Jackson Jr.

SUMMARY:John Zorn’s FLATLANDS
DESCRIPTION:Matt Hollenberg (guitar)\, Simon Hanes (bass)\, Ches Smith (drums) \nJohn Zorn’s newest project Flatlands is a dynamic power trio in the Simulacrum / Naked City / Insurrection mold—a new music super-group featuring Matt Hollenberg (Simulacrum\, Shardik\, Secret Chiefs 3) on electric guitar\, Simon Hanes (Gargantua\, Tredici Bacci\, Tsons of Tsunami) on electric bass\, and Ches Smith (Clone Row\, We All Break\, Laugh Ash) on drums. The music is intense\, quirky\, and wildly ecstatic—thirteen compact stop-on-a-dime kaleidoscopic compositions filled with virtuosic solos\, infectious riffs\, atonal melodies\, advanced harmonies\, complex rhythms\, and plenty of the ever surprising structural innovations that has made Zorn one of the most continually fascinating composers of the past fifty years. Not to be missed!
