Born in Lawrence\, Kansas and raised in Kansas City\, Watson trained formally at the University of Miami\, where his classmates included Pat Metheny\, Jaco Pastorius\, and Bruce Hornsby. After graduating in 1975\, he moved to New York City and became musical director of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers from 1977 to 1981\, contributing to 14 Jazz Messengers recordings\, more than any other musician in the group’s 35 year history. He went on to work with jazz icons Max Roach\, Louis Hayes\, George Coleman\, and Sam Rivers\, along with legendary vocalists Joe Williams\, Lou Rawls\, Betty Carter\, Dianne Reeves\, and Carmen Lundy. \nIn the late 1980s\, Watson launched his acclaimed acoustic quintet Horizon alongside bassist Curtis Lundy and drummer Victor Lewis\, releasing a string of now classic recordings for Blue Note and Columbia. As a leader he has released nearly 30 albums and appeared on over 100 more as a sideman or co-leader\, along with composing more than 100 original works\, including music for the soundtrack of Robert De Niro’s directorial debut\, A Bronx Tale. He is also a founding member of the celebrated 29th Street Saxophone Quartet. A devoted educator\, Watson served as the first William D. and Mary Grant Distinguished Professor in Jazz Studies at the University of Missouri\, Kansas City\, transforming the program into one of the finest in the country over his 20 year tenure. His many honors include induction into the Kansas Music Hall of Fame\, the Benny Golson Jazz Masters Award from Howard University\, and selection as one of the first inductees into Kansas City’s 18th and Vine Jazz Walk of Fame\, alongside Count Basie\, Charlie Parker\, Mary Lou Williams\, and Pat Metheny. \nJoining Watson is his longtime musical partner Curtis Lundy on bass\, along with pianist Jordan Williams and drummer Victor Jones\, an ensemble of extraordinary depth and history. DESCRIPTION:For over 24 years\, hosting public rehearsals every Monday night\, now at Guilford VFW Post 7666. \nTuxedo Junction was started in 1989 by Pete Jacobs (trumpet) and Will Tayler (drums)\, WWII veterans who set up an 8-piece Dixieland jazz band in the basement of the senior citizens center in Madison\, CT. Pat soon joined on piano. \nThe band quickly grew into a full swing band as Pete added big band arrangements and people joined: everyone from high school students to retired music teachers started to fill out the sections. Tuxedo Junction moved its practice home to the Westbrook Elks briefly\, and in 1997 Paul James suggested that Bill’s Seafood restaurant in Westbrook would be a great place to share the sounds of swing. After more than 20 years of Monday nights at Bill’s\, originally outnumbering the customers and staff before turning it into the most happening place on the Shoreline for a Monday night\, we moved outside to Town Greens\, Overlook Farm in Killingworth\, and the Guilford VFW. \nTuxedo Junction plays original big band arrangements from the 30’s through the present\, including charts from Count Basie\, Duke Ellington\, Glenn Miller\, Sy Zentner\, Buddy Rich\, Frank Sinatra\, Ella Fitzgerald\, and more. We focus on danceable tunes from swing to waltz\, foxtrot to two-step\, Latin and even some rock. The band has weekly open rehearsals at local venues on the Eastern Connecticut shoreline. The public is invited to dance and listen in at no charge. We are also available for hire at public and private events throughout Connecticut. \nAfter more than 1\,001 performances\, Tuxedo Junction has become a musical success story. We are now eighteen passionate musicians\, men and women of all ages\, following the great jazz tradition and warmly welcoming visiting jazz musicians to sit in.

DESCRIPTION:In this concert\, hosted by Noah Baerman as part of the interactive Jazz Up Close series\, vocalist Andrea Wolper performs with Baerman on piano\, Henry Lugo on bass\, and Jocelyn Pleasant on drums. \nVocalist/composer Andrea Wolper is a mainstay of the New York jazz scene\, having appeared in top clubs including the Blue Note\, Dizzy’s Club\, Birdland\, Mezzrow\, the 55 Bar\, Zinc Bar\, and innumerable others. She tours in the U.S. and abroad\, and records and performs for other artists across jazz genres\, from holding a vocal chair with the straight ahead Heavenly Big Band to appearing in several performance and recording projects of free jazz bassist William Parker. She was a member of Jay Clayton’s Different Voices performing group\, and of the collective improvising trio\, TranceFormation\, with Connie Crothers and Ken Filiano. The critically acclaimed Wanderlust (Moonflower Music) is Wolper’s fourth and most recent album. \nThe Jazz Up Close format\, curated and hosted since 2015 by Baerman\, Director of the Wesleyan University Jazz Ensemble and Private Lessons Instructor\, prioritizes deeper understanding of the music and the musicians’ practice\, with dialogue between musicians and attendees interspersed throughout the event. \nAdmission is free\, and everyone is welcome. \nWe encourage you to RSVP to help us with our planning and to get a reminder the day before this event. DESCRIPTION:A two-time Grammy nominated vocalist and boundary-pushing creative force brings her quartet to The Side Door. \n\n\n\n\nThana Alexa: Voice/Loops/FX/Percussion \nAlejandra Sofia: Keys/Voice \nJC Maillard: Guitar/Voice \nJacqueline Acevedo: Percussion/Voice \nThana Alexa is one of the most inventive voices in jazz today\, a vocalist\, composer\, arranger\, and producer whose music pushes the boundaries of the genre while remaining deeply rooted in the jazz tradition. Born in New York City to a Croatian family\, Alexa earned her BFA in Jazz and Contemporary Music from The New School\, and her use of the voice as both a lyrical and experimental instrument has drawn comparisons to some of the most creative vocalists working today. Billboard has praised her for “turning a style of scatting that’s become cliche into something entirely new\, evocative\, and exhilarating\,” while JazzTimes writes that “her voice is enthralling\, her compositions are heart warming and her arrangements are heart stopping.” \nAlexa’s 2020 album ONA\, meaning “she” in Croatian\, earned her two Grammy nominations\, including Best Jazz Vocal Album\, and was inspired by the cross generational stories of the immigrant women in her family\, evolving into an exploration of the experiences of contemporary women everywhere. She is an active member of her husband\, five time Grammy winner Antonio Sanchez’s touring ensemble Migration\, and formed the trio SONICA alongside fellow vocalist Nicole Zuraitis and bassist Julia Adamy. DESCRIPTION:An acclaimed German-born bassist and composer brings his quartet\, featuring three of jazz’s most respected musicians\, to The Side Door. \n\n\n\n\nMartin Wind – Bass\nScott Robinson – Saxophone\nGlenn Zaleski – Piano\nMatt Wilson – Drums \nMartin Wind was born in Flensburg\, Germany in 1968 and moved to New York in 1996 to study at NYU on a scholarship from the German Academic Exchange Service. He earned his diploma as an orchestral musician from the Music Conservatory in Cologne under Wolfgang Guettler\, former bassist of the Berlin Philharmonic\, before completing his Master’s degree in Jazz Performance and Composition at NYU under Mike Richmond\, Jim McNeely\, and Kenny Werner. In 1995 he placed third at the International Thelonious Monk Bass Competition in Washington\, D.C.\, and the following year his trio Dreiklang won the first Cognac Hennessy Blue Note Jazz Search in Germany\, leading to a recording for Blue Note Records. \nSince settling in New York\, Wind has become a fixture of the city’s jazz scene\, recording and performing with an extraordinary range of artists\, including Pat Metheny\, Toots Thielemans\, Clark Terry\, Phil Woods\, Slide Hampton\, Buddy DeFranco\, John Scofield\, Sting\, Kenny Barron\, and Houston Person\, along with regular appearances with the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra. He has released more than 20 albums as a leader or co-leader\, and is a longstanding member of ensembles led by pianists Bill Mays\, Dena DeRose\, and Ted Rosenthal\, as well as drummer Matt Wilson’s various groups. DESCRIPTION:A native of the Bronx\, Samara Joy became entranced by classic R&B as a child and cut her teeth as a singer in her church’s gospel choir. And while her family history is deeply musical—her grandparents helmed the Philadelphia gospel group the Savettes\, and her father\, the musician and songwriter Antonio McLendon\, has produced\, composed and arranged his own astounding original work—she didn’t delve into the jazz tradition until college at SUNY Purchase. During her studies there she won the 2019 Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition\, which introduced her to the larger jazz scene as a rising star to watch. She was heard\, by audiences and critics alike\, as a masterful interpreter of jazz standards and a rightful heiress of the sound\, technique and charisma that defined her jazz heroines—including Vaughan\, Betty Carter\, Abbey Lincoln and Carmen McRae. \nJoy released her self-titled debut on the Whirlwind label in 2021\, followed a year later by Linger Awhile\, her breakout Verve debut\, of which Down Beat said\, “With this beautiful recording\, a silky-voiced star is born.” The album earned her a Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Album in addition to a headline-making win for Best New Artist. A deluxe edition of the album was released\, as well as the EP A Joyful Holiday\, which took home Grammys for Best Jazz Vocal Album and Best Jazz Performance in 2025. Her latest Verve album\, Portrait\, which Joy co-produced with the veteran trumpeter/bandleader and multi-Grammy winner Brian Lynch\, showcases the intimate\, soulful chemistry she’s developed with her touring band\, earning her an NAACP Image Award in 2025 for Outstanding Jazz Album and the GRAMMY for Best Vocal Jazz Album in 2026. DESCRIPTION:For over 24 years\, hosting public rehearsals every Monday night\, now at Guilford VFW Post 7666. \nTuxedo Junction was started in 1989 by Pete Jacobs (trumpet) and Will Tayler (drums)\, WWII veterans who set up an 8-piece Dixieland jazz band in the basement of the senior citizens center in Madison\, CT. Pat soon joined on piano. \nThe band quickly grew into a full swing band as Pete added big band arrangements and people joined: everyone from high school students to retired music teachers started to fill out the sections. Tuxedo Junction moved its practice home to the Westbrook Elks briefly\, and in 1997 Paul James suggested that Bill’s Seafood restaurant in Westbrook would be a great place to share the sounds of swing. After more than 20 years of Monday nights at Bill’s\, originally outnumbering the customers and staff before turning it into the most happening place on the Shoreline for a Monday night\, we moved outside to Town Greens\, Overlook Farm in Killingworth\, and the Guilford VFW. \nTuxedo Junction plays original big band arrangements from the 30’s through the present\, including charts from Count Basie\, Duke Ellington\, Glenn Miller\, Sy Zentner\, Buddy Rich\, Frank Sinatra\, Ella Fitzgerald\, and more. We focus on danceable tunes from swing to waltz\, foxtrot to two-step\, Latin and even some rock. The band has weekly open rehearsals at local venues on the Eastern Connecticut shoreline. The public is invited to dance and listen in at no charge. We are also available for hire at public and private events throughout Connecticut. \nAfter more than 1\,001 performances\, Tuxedo Junction has become a musical success story. We are now eighteen passionate musicians\, men and women of all ages\, following the great jazz tradition and warmly welcoming visiting jazz musicians to sit in.

It has a very wide range from extremely low bass-notes to the more traditional guitar range. Brett is a Berkeley College of Music grad who gives Stick seminars around the country\, performs and records a range of music from traditional jazz to progressive rock to the more experimental sounds of electronhic. \nJamie Finegan (keyboards) is a composer and multi instrumentalist playing trumpet and piano and anything else he can get his hands on. His professional playing credits are myriad and diverse having recorded\, toured and performed all over the world\, with many great jazz and blues artists including: the late\, great Ella Fitzgerald\, Dizzy Gillespie\, Clark Terry\, Jim Hall\, Geri Mulligan\, Bob Brookmeyer\, Phil Guy Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown\, as well as Lucky Peterson\, Randy Brecker\, Don Braden and many others. Jamie is a long-time a music educator including at Fairfield University. \nChris Morrison (guitar) began performing early on with New Haven\, CT jazz organists Richard McCrae\, Bobby Buster and Eddie Buster. Chris has been fortunate to record and perform with many wonderful musicians\, including saxophonist Andrew Beals\, and the legendary guitarist\, Joe Diorio\, as his guitar duo partner. He was a member of the jazz faculty at Western Connecticut State University for 30 years and continues to play and teach. \nBob Gorry (guitar) is a guitarist/composer/bandleader living in and working out of New Haven\, CT where he curates the Impossible Music Series and leads the New Haven Improvisers Collective\, a group he founded that is now celebrating 21 years. Other current working bands include GoBruCcio\, The Light Upon Blight Ensemble\, RHINOCH\, and The Roundhouse Quartet. He has performed and recorded with Joe Morris\, Stephen Haynes\, Butch Morris\, Vance Provey\, Allen Lowe\, Greg Bendian\, Albee Balgochian\, Adam Matlock\, Brett Bottomley\, Michael Larocca\, and many more. \nStephen Chillemi (drums) – Multi-Instrumentalist and long-time New Haven Avant Garde Torch Bearer from Dr. Dark\, Doot\, Invisible Them and many more. Has played with everyone and played around the world\, from New York to LA to Zappanale in Bad Doberan\, Germany. \n9/21\nKnox Chandler’s career has spanned over four decades\, including long stints as a member of The Psychedelic Furs\, Siouxsie and the Banshees\, and the Cyndi Lauper band\, as well as extraordinary experiences in recording and performing live around the world on guitar\, bass\, and cello. Knox spent a decade residing in Berlin\, Germany\, while he explored sound-scaping. He developed a technique he calls “Soundribbons”\, which he recorded and performed in its own right as well as applying it to different genres and mediums. He composed\, recorded\, toured\, produced\, and wrote string arrangements for Herbert Grönemeyer\, Jesper Munk\, Pure Reason Revolution\, The Still\, TAU\, Miss Kenichi and the Sun\, Mars William’s Albert Ayler Xmas\, Rita Redshoes\, Them There\, The Night\, etc. \nRHINOCH – featuring drastic\, fantastic and elastic power trio; krautrock rhythms and skronks. A new CD will be available.\nBob Gorry (bass) is a guitarist/composer/bandleader living in and working out of New Haven\, CT where he curates the NHIC New Music series and leads the New Haven Improvisers Collective\, a group he founded over 20 years ago. He has an art rock trio\, douxreves\, and is a core member of the New Haven Improvisers Collective \nPeter Riccio (drums) acquired his first set of drums at the age of eight and has been involved in a constant stream of diverse performing groups and configurations ever since (indie rock\, punk\, jazz\, new music\, etc). He studied jazz drums at Berklee College of Music along the way. He has played in punk\, indie rock\, and jazz groups. Peter also plays rhythm guitar\, sings\, and writes songs for the Sawtelles and plays drums with Lys Guillorn’s Void Kittens.

DESCRIPTION:A Grammy Award winning pianist and one of the true masters of the American songbook brings his trio to The Side Door for four unforgettable \n\n\n\n\nBill Charlap – Piano\nDavid Wong – Bass\nDennis Mackrel – Drums \nBill Charlap was born in New York City into a deeply musical family\, his father was Broadway composer Moose Charlap\, whose credits include Peter Pan\, and his mother is singer Sandy Stewart\, a Grammy nominated vocalist who toured with Benny Goodman. Charlap began playing piano at age three and never looked back. In the late 1980s he joined Gerry Mulligan’s quintet\, and in 1995 secured one of the most coveted piano chairs in jazz with the Phil Woods Quintet. Since then he has performed with an extraordinary range of the music’s leading artists\, including Tony Bennett\, Wynton Marsalis\, Ron Carter\, Dee Dee Bridgewater\, Houston Person\, and Barbra Streisand. \nCharlap is widely regarded as one of the most gifted interpreters of the American songbook working today. Time magazine has written that he “approaches a song the way a lover approaches his beloved\, no matter how imaginative or surprising his take on a song is\, he invariably zeroes in on its essence.” His acclaimed trio\, celebrated for its telepathic interplay and deep swing\, has been together for decades and has released nearly 20 albums together. DESCRIPTION:A Grammy Award winning pianist and one of the true masters of the American songbook brings his trio to The Side Door for four unforgettable \n\n\n\n\nBill Charlap – Piano\nDavid Wong – Bass\nDennis Mackrel – Drums \nBill Charlap was born in New York City into a deeply musical family\, his father was Broadway composer Moose Charlap\, whose credits include Peter Pan\, and his mother is singer Sandy Stewart\, a Grammy nominated vocalist who toured with Benny Goodman. Charlap began playing piano at age three and never looked back. In the late 1980s he joined Gerry Mulligan’s quintet\, and in 1995 secured one of the most coveted piano chairs in jazz with the Phil Woods Quintet. Since then he has performed with an extraordinary range of the music’s leading artists\, including Tony Bennett\, Wynton Marsalis\, Ron Carter\, Dee Dee Bridgewater\, Houston Person\, and Barbra Streisand. \nCharlap is widely regarded as one of the most gifted interpreters of the American songbook working today. Time magazine has written that he “approaches a song the way a lover approaches his beloved\, no matter how imaginative or surprising his take on a song is\, he invariably zeroes in on its essence.” His acclaimed trio\, celebrated for its telepathic interplay and deep swing\, has been together for decades and has released nearly 20 albums together. In 2016\, his collaboration with Tony Bennett\, The Silver Lining: The Songs of Jerome Kern\, won the Grammy Award for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album.
