SUMMARY:Tuxedo Junction
DESCRIPTION:For over 24 years\, hosting public rehearsals every Monday night\, now at Guilford VFW Post 7666. \nTuxedo Junction was started in 1989 by Pete Jacobs (trumpet) and Will Tayler (drums)\, WWII veterans who set up an 8-piece Dixieland jazz band in the basement of the senior citizens center in Madison\, CT. Pat soon joined on piano. \nThe band quickly grew into a full swing band as Pete added big band arrangements and people joined: everyone from high school students to retired music teachers started to fill out the sections. Tuxedo Junction moved its practice home to the Westbrook Elks briefly\, and in 1997 Paul James suggested that Bill’s Seafood restaurant in Westbrook would be a great place to share the sounds of swing. After more than 20 years of Monday nights at Bill’s\, originally outnumbering the customers and staff before turning it into the most happening place on the Shoreline for a Monday night\, we moved outside to Town Greens\, Overlook Farm in Killingworth\, and the Guilford VFW. \nTuxedo Junction plays original big band arrangements from the 30’s through the present\, including charts from Count Basie\, Duke Ellington\, Glenn Miller\, Sy Zentner\, Buddy Rich\, Frank Sinatra\, Ella Fitzgerald\, and more. We focus on danceable tunes from swing to waltz\, foxtrot to two-step\, Latin and even some rock. The band has weekly open rehearsals at local venues on the Eastern Connecticut shoreline. The public is invited to dance and listen in at no charge. We are also available for hire at public and private events throughout Connecticut. \nAfter more than 1\,001 performances\, Tuxedo Junction has become a musical success story. We are now eighteen passionate musicians\, men and women of all ages\, following the great jazz tradition and warmly welcoming visiting jazz musicians to sit in.

SUMMARY:Donald Vega Sextet
DESCRIPTION:Donald Vega – Piano \nDavid DeJesus – Alto Saxophone \nBrandon Lee – Trumpet \nRaul Reyes – Bass \nCarlos “Carly” Maldonado – Percussion \nJerome Jennings – Drums \nGrammy®-nominated pianist and composer Donald Vega brings his new project\, Legacy\, to the stage — celebrating the power of mentorship and the timeless ways communities pass stories and traditions from one generation to the next. Funded in part by Chamber Music America’s New Jazz Works grant\, Legacy is music in conversation with time itself: swinging tunes\, Latin grooves\, and unforgettable melodies that honor jazz’s living tradition while reaching for the future. Experience an evening of storytelling through sound with one of today’s most compelling jazz voices. \nGrammy® nominated artist Donald Vega is a luminary on the piano and unites audiences around the world through his melodic storytelling and the transformative power of music. Vega was named a Guggenheim Fellow in 2023 for composition\, and through the generous support of the Guggenheim Memorial Foundation completed and released his album As I Travel\, which earned a Grammy® nomination for Best Latin Jazz Album. \nDonald Vega was trained classically in piano in his native Nicaragua. He emigrated to the United States at age 14 and found a musical home with the Colburn School of Performing Arts (CSPA). He began his studies there in classical piano with Teresa de Jong Pombo and Dr. Louise Lepley. Vega began learning the language of jazz from mentor Billy Higgins at The World Stage and continued at CSPA with Jeffrey Lavner\, then later with bassist John Clayton at the University of Southern California. During his time in Los Angeles Donald was mentored by and performed with the celebrated conguero Francisco Aguabella as well as notable bassist Al McKibbon. He went on to graduate from Manhattan School of Music and The Juilliard School where he studied with piano great Kenny Barron\, Phil Markowitz and Gary Dial. \nVega currently performs internationally as the pianist for world renowned bassist Ron Carter with whom he has recorded several albums. Mr. Vega is also a professor at The Juilliard School and Hofstra University and sits on the board of BackCountry Jazz\, a non-profit organization which provides music education programs and performances to underprivileged youth. \nVega’s debut album\, Tomorrows\, was released in 2008 to rave reviews. In his sophomore album\, Spiritual Nature (Resonance Records\, 2012)\, he was joined by the regal rhythm tandem of bassist Christian McBride and drummer Lewis Nash. Vega teamed up again with Lewis Nash on his third album\, With Respect to Monty\, (Resonance Records\, 2015) along with Hassan Shakur\, the great bassist and former Monty Alexander band member\, and long-time friend and grammy nominated artist\, Anthony Wilson on guitar. Donald recently released his latest album\, As I Travel\, with Lewis Nash on drums and John Patitucci on bass and featuring Luisito Quintero on percussion. Downbeat called it a “recording with high-caliber vision and carefully crafted compositions…” and All About Jazz called it a “captivating musical memoir”.

SUMMARY:Jon Irabagon Quartet w/Nate Wooley
DESCRIPTION:Jon Irabagon (reeds)\, Matt Mitchell (piano)\, Chris Lightcap (bass)\, Dan Weiss (drums)\, Nate Wooley (trumpet) \nFirst-generation Filipino-American Jon Irabagon (b. 1978\, Chicago) has been influenced by the self-empowering and individualistic philosophies and aesthetic of the great AACM (Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians) ensembles as well as the historic world-class tenor saxophone lineage from his hometown. Equally adept at composing for rising stars in new music and the most intricate modern jazz ensemble\, Irabagon builds on this foundation by adding modern classical and late-period John Coltrane to his compositional base\, focusing primarily on mixed chamber ensembles to take advantage of hand-chosen musicians’ voices and attitudes. \nAfter earning a Bachelor of Music from DePaul University\, Irabagon continued his education by earning a Master of Arts from the Manhattan School of Music and completing post-graduate studies in the jazz program at Juilliard\, where he received an Artist Diploma. However\, Irabagon’s accomplishments do not end with his education. Irabagon was also the winner of the 2008 Thelonious Monk Saxophone Competition\, winner of the Rising Star award in Downbeat Magazine for both alto and tenor saxophones\, and the recipient of a Philippine Presidential Award\, the highest civilian honor an overseas Filipino can receive in commemoration for their contributions to the perception of Filipinos worldwide. \nAs a member of a minority community who fights against the countless times his voice has been marginalized\, Irabagon’s compositions rely on open dialogues with his fellow performers to create a gateway for communication and understanding. This interaction of notated material and strong improvisatory character is essential to Irabagon’s musical vision. As music reporter Nate Chinen notes in his Top Performances of 2015 article\, Irabagon’s compositions “are drawn to the play of opposing forces\, especially those involving abstraction of form.” \nNamed one of New York City’s 25 Jazz Icons by Time Out New York\, Irabagon composes for his ensemble Outright!\, which received a 5-star Masterpiece review in Downbeat Magazine for Unhinged (2014)\, as well as the Jon Irabagon Trio\, featuring Barry Altschul and Mark Helias\, and his new quartet with Matt Mitchell\, Chris Lightcap and Dan Weiss. Irabagon has been an integral part of ensembles such as the Dave Douglas Quintet\, the Mary Halvorson Quintet\, Septet and Octet\, Barry Altschul’s 3Dom Factor\, Ralph Alessi’s This Against That\, Mostly Other People do the Killing and Uri Caine’s Catbird. \nIrabagon has been an ensemble and private lesson instructor for all levels at several institutions in the New York City area\, including with Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Middle School Jazz Academy\, as well as giving saxophone\, improvisation\, and composition masterclasses on four continents. \nIn January 2023\, Irabagon joined the University of Illinois Chicago faculty\, teaching jazz saxophone\, direct combos\, and courses in jazz history. \nIrabagon’s main focus is building his own compositional voice\, as evidenced by receiving grants and commissions like The Stone at National Sawdust Commissioning Series\, an Artists at Albatross Reach compositional residency\, the Shifting Foundation\, two French American Cultural Exchange grants\, a Chamber Music America New Jazz Works grant\, a South Arts Jazz Road touring grant\, and an upcoming USArtists International grant. \nIrabagon currently runs his own imprint\, Irabbagast Records\, to release his own uncategorizable works as well as other cutting-edge\, creative artists.

SUMMARY:Ben Wolfe Quartet
DESCRIPTION:John Ellis – Saxophone\nJoel Ross – Vibes\nBen Wolfe – Bass\nAaron Kimmel – Drums \nNew York bassist/composer and bandleader Ben Wolfe’s music has been described as “Mingus and Miles Davis meet Bartok and Bernard Herrmann” (Ben Ratliff – The New York Times). With acclaim by some of the jazz world’s most respected critics\, Wolfe continues to produce works that draw top-flight reviews from fans and jazz journalists alike.\nBen’s 2024 release The Understated is his eleventh as leader and features all original compositions. Nicole Glover who plays tenor saxophone on the record says in her liner notes “This record succeeds in bringing Ben’s beautiful music to life through extremely conscientious group playing. Nothing is forced or pushed; everything that needs to be stated is stated.”\n“The Understated is a beauty.” (Carlo Wolff\, Downbeat) \nIn many ways\, The Understated is a continuation of his previous release the critically acclaimed Unjust. “Unjust is a brilliant work of melodic ensemble writing and superb playing by a stellar intergenerational crew.” (Bill Milkowski\, Downbeat). \nIts balance – of elegance and propulsion\, of accessibility and edge – distinguishes it from most conventional jazz. Its details reward repeated listening.” (Larry Blumenfeld\, Wall Street Journal)\nThere is no doubt that after decades as one of the most sought-after bassists in jazz\, performing with top names such as Wynton Marsalis\, Harry Connick Jr.\, Diana Krall and many others\, award-winning composer and bandleader Ben Wolfe is clear about his creative direction… \n“Much of the music I’ve composed; particularly the music that includes strings\, I think of as chamber music within a jazz context.” \nAn award-winning composer\, Ben is a two-time recipient of Chamber Music America’s New Works: Creation and Presentation Program Grant through the Doris Duke Foundation. First received in 2004\, Ben was able to use this funding to compose his extended work “Contradiction: Music for Sextet.” He received the grant in 2020 and composed “Nonet”. Both of these extended works have been recorded for future release. \nWolfe has distinguished himself through a significant catalogue of original music\, including over one hundred songs across eleven albums\, several extended works\, and the film score for Matthew Modine’s 2008 short I Think I Thought. The New York Sun hailed his work on this film as\, “a standout music score.” \nWolfe’s early career included Grammy award-winning\, platinum-selling collaborations with both Harry Connick Jr. and Diana Krall\, including Harry’s 1988 soundtrack album When Harry Met Sally\, and Diana’s 1999 release When I Look in Your Eyes. He appeared alongside both artists on numerous world tours. \nWolfe’s ongoing and close association with Wynton Marsalis; during which Marsalis recorded as a guest on two of his albums\, has seen Ben appear on a number of Wynton’s releases\, and included a stint in the Wynton Marsalis Septet and membership in the Jazz at Lincoln CenteOrchestra (JLCO)\, where he performed with jazz luminaries such as Joe Henderson\, Doc Cheatham\, Jon Hendricks\, Harry “Sweets” Edison\, and Billy Higgins\, among many others. Contemporary jazz greats with whom he has also worked and recorded include Branford Marsalis\, Orrin Evans\, Eric Reed and Benny Green. \nBen Wolfe’s full list of recorded original albums as a leader:\n• The Understated\, Resident Arts Records (2024)\n• Unjust\, Resident Arts Records (2023)\n• Fatherhood\, Resident Arts Records (2019)\n• The Whisperer\, Posi-Tone (2015)\n• From Here I See\, MAXJAZZ/Mack Avenue Records (2013)\n• Ben Wolfe Quintet: Live at Smalls\, SmallsLIVE (2011)\n• No Strangers Here\, MAXJAZZ/Mack Avenue Records (2008)\n• My Kinda Beautiful\, Planet Arts Records (2004)\n• Murray’s Cadillac\, Amosaya Music (2000)\n• Bagdad Theater\, Mons Records (1997)\n• 13 Sketches\, Mons Records (1996) \nBen maintains a busy schedule\, performing and touring on the international stage. Currently a member of the teaching faculty at The Julliard School in New York City\, Ben is helping to shape and mentor the jazz scene’s next generation of outstanding talent. \n“Ben Wolfe swings with authority!”– to quote Wynton Marsalis. It can’t be said any better!

SUMMARY:Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue
DESCRIPTION:Trombone Shorty and Orleans Avenue is an American funk\, jazz\, and soul band led by the talented trombonist and trumpeter Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews. Hailing from New Orleans\, the group blends a variety of musical genres\, including jazz\, funk\, R&B\, and rock\, creating a high-energy sound that captures the essence of their hometown’s rich musical heritage. Known for their electrifying live performances\, Trombone Shorty and Orleans Avenue have garnered a global following with their dynamic\, horn-driven music and Trombone Shorty’s virtuosic skills on brass instruments. \nBorn Troy Andrews\, Trombone Shorty got his start (and nickname) earlier than most: at four\, he made his first appearance at Jazz Fest performing with Bo Diddley; at six\, he was leading his own brass band; and by his teenage years\, he was hired by Lenny Kravitz to join the band he assembled for his Electric Church World Tour. Shorty’s proven he’s more than just a horn player\, though. Catch a gig\, open the pages of the New York Times or Vanity Fair\, flip on any late-night or morning TV show and you’ll see an undeniable star with utterly magnetic charisma\, a natural born showman who can command an audience with the best of them. \nSince 2010\, he’s released five chart topping studio albums (his most recent being 2022’s Lifted); toured with everyone from Jeff Beck to the Red Hot Chili Peppers; collaborated across genres with Pharrell\, Bruno Mars\, Mark Ronson\, Foo Fighters\, ZHU\, Zac Brown\, Normani\, Ringo Starr\, and countless more; played Coachella\, Bonnaroo\, Lollapalooza\, Newport Folk\, Newport Jazz\, and nearly every other major festival; performed four times at the GRAMMY Awards\, six times at the White House\, on dozens of TV shows\, and at the star-studded Sesame Street Gala\, where he was honored with his own Muppet; launched the Trombone Shorty Foundation to support youth music education; and received the prestigious Caldecott Honor for his first children’s book. \nMeanwhile in New Orleans\, Shorty now leads his own Mardi Gras parade atop a giant float crafted in his likeness\, hosts the annual Treme Threauxdown shows that have drawn guests including Usher\, Nick Jonas\, Dierks Bentley\, Andra Day\, and Leon Bridges to sit in with his band\, and has taken over the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival’s hallowed final set\, which has seen him closing out the internationally renowned gathering after performances by the likes of Neil Young\, the Black Keys\, and Kings of Leon. \nSince the release of Lifted\, Shorty and his band have made appearances on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert\, Jimmy Kimmel Live!\, TODAY and Good Morning America\, and CBS Mornings. Shorty has also recently performed at the MusiCares pre-GRAMMY Awards gala\, the Roots Picnic with Lil Wayne\, on the instantly legendary NPR Tiny Desk featuring Juvenile\, and at the White House’s 2024 Juneteenth concert. His recent 2024 summer tour featured special guest Big Boi and included a stop at the legendary Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles.

SUMMARY:Elliott Sharp & Janene Higgins: Entanglement Suite
DESCRIPTION:Elliott Sharp (guitars)\, Janene Higgins (live video) \nElliott Sharp and Janene Higgins will present Entanglement Suite\, a structure for improvisation using video and sound. In their work together\, the images provide a visual counterpoint to the music. Foreground and background are continuously shifting as both sound and visuals emerge from fixed elements and then expand with improvised extrapolations. The projections may solidify the abstract but may also elevate that which is obvious to another level of meaning\, never literal\, never explaining\, but creating an immediate visceral response. \nSharp will also read from his latest book\, Feedback: Translations From The IrRational. Feedback is a wide-ranging meditation on music\, sound\, artificial intelligence\, consciousness\, contemporary culture and politics\, and the life of the touring musician. Author Elliott Sharp is considered one of the central figures in NYC’s Downtown Scene and is a composer\, producer\, multi-instrumentalist\, visual artist\, and educator. Starting from a background in the sciences\, Sharp found his passion for music as a teen\, and it has never abated. His philosophy is informed not just by music and its creation but by continuing studies in physics and genetics and a visceral interest in our modern world and its joys and horrors. In Feedback\, Sharp engages in speculative thought about how consciousness might have arisen and what the future holds for humanity with the advent of an Artificial Intelligence that is certainly artificial but might not exactly be intelligent. The “Improviser’s Mind” is discussed in the context of post-quantum physics\, probability\, socio-acoustics\, and Butoh dance. Sharp loves to digress into unpredictable areas but ties it all together in an overarching narrative that is both personal and conceptual. \nAs a composer\, Sharp’s strategies encompass fractal geometry\, chaos theory\, algorithmic approaches\, genetic metaphors\, and new techniques for graphic notation to yield work catalyzing a synesthetic approach to music as well as functioning as retinal art. A multi-instrumentalist\, Sharp will perform on guitars and electronics. \nA graphic designer by profession\, Janene Higgins uses original footage\, hand-painted textures\, and digital processing in her projection design which she may then manipulate live\, using various software operations. \nSharp and Higgins have created a number of operas with the visuals providing set and setting as well as commentary. The operas include Binibon (2009)\, Port Bou (2014)\, Filiseti Mekidesi (2018)\, and Die Grösste Fuge (2021). In addition\, their Entanglement Suite was premiered in Naples\, Italy in September 2023 by the Ensemble Dissonanzen. \nJANENE HIGGINS is a video artist and graphic designer based in New York City. Her work spans several genres\, from video performance in the experimental music scene to commercial videos\, to the design of CD packages for such record labels as Sony\, BMG\, PolyGram\, and a wide variety of independents. Her collaborators include Ikue Mori\, Mari Kimura\, Alan Licht\, Nurit Tilles\, Okkyung Lee\, Aki Onda\, and Zeena Parkins. In addition to video performance\, she has directed several short experimental videos\, often with sound design by notable avant-garde artists including Elliott Sharp\, Parkins\, Christian Marclay and John Duncan. Her work has been performed and exhibited at The New York Video Festival at Lincoln Center; Documenta in Kassel\, Germany; The Kitchen\, NYC; Musée d’art contemporain de Lyon; City of Women festival\, Slovenia; The Chelsea Art Museum\, NYC; HiTeca Festival in Porto\, Portugal; Art Institute of Chicago; Experimenta Festival in Buenos Aires; The Hamburg Short Film Festival; and at The Impakt Festival in The Netherlands. \nELLIOTT SHARP is a composer\, producer\, and multi-instrumentalist who leads the projects Orchestra Carbon\, SysOrk\, Tectonics and Terraplane. His compositional strategies have encompassed the use of fractal geometry\, chaos theory\, algorithms\, genetic metaphors\, and new techniques for graphic notation to yield work that catalyzes a synesthetic approach to musicmaking as well as functioning as retinal art. In 2015\, Sharp was awarded both the Berlin Prize and the Jahrespreis from der Deutscher Schallplatten Kritiks. In 2014 he received a Guggenheim Fellowship and a Fellowship from the Center for Transformative Media. SUMMARY:Omar Sosa Quarteto Americanos - Live recording at Studio 9
DESCRIPTION:Quarteto Americanos is Omar Sosa’s first U.S.-based jazz ensemble since the 1990s! Featuring drummer Josh Jones\, bassist Ernesto Mazar Kindelán\, and saxophone / clarinet / flute player Sheldon Brown\, the group came together in February 2021 when Omar was in the Bay Area for several live streams. Connecting with Josh and Sheldon was a gratifying reunion for Omar\, as he played extensively with them during his early days in San Francisco and Oakland in the late 1990s. \nOmar’s Quarteto Americanos plays a number of arrangements of Omar’s signature compositions from his early career\, including ‘My Three Notes’\, ‘Angustia’\, and ‘Toridanzón’\, as well as new songs written by Omar in Barcelona during the lockdown in 2020. Like Omar’s oeuvre\, Quarteto Americanos’ repertoire is eclectic and energizing. Its improvisational approach seamlessly fuses elements of jazz\, Latin\, hip-hop\, and electronica into an exciting\, passionate\, contemporary sound.
