SUMMARY:Tuxedo Junction
DESCRIPTION:For over 24 years\, hosting public rehearsals every Monday night\, now at Guilford VFW Post 7666. \nTuxedo Junction was started in 1989 by Pete Jacobs (trumpet) and Will Tayler (drums)\, WWII veterans who set up an 8-piece Dixieland jazz band in the basement of the senior citizens center in Madison\, CT. Pat soon joined on piano. \nThe band quickly grew into a full swing band as Pete added big band arrangements and people joined: everyone from high school students to retired music teachers started to fill out the sections. Tuxedo Junction moved its practice home to the Westbrook Elks briefly\, and in 1997 Paul James suggested that Bill’s Seafood restaurant in Westbrook would be a great place to share the sounds of swing. After more than 20 years of Monday nights at Bill’s\, originally outnumbering the customers and staff before turning it into the most happening place on the Shoreline for a Monday night\, we moved outside to Town Greens\, Overlook Farm in Killingworth\, and the Guilford VFW. \nTuxedo Junction plays original big band arrangements from the 30’s through the present\, including charts from Count Basie\, Duke Ellington\, Glenn Miller\, Sy Zentner\, Buddy Rich\, Frank Sinatra\, Ella Fitzgerald\, and more. We focus on danceable tunes from swing to waltz\, foxtrot to two-step\, Latin and even some rock. The band has weekly open rehearsals at local venues on the Eastern Connecticut shoreline. The public is invited to dance and listen in at no charge. We are also available for hire at public and private events throughout Connecticut. \nAfter more than 1\,001 performances\, Tuxedo Junction has become a musical success story. We are now eighteen passionate musicians\, men and women of all ages\, following the great jazz tradition and warmly welcoming visiting jazz musicians to sit in.

SUMMARY:Big Bad Voodoo Daddy
DESCRIPTION:April\, 2026\, marks the 33 year anniversary of Big Bad Voodoo Daddy’s remarkable arrival onto the music scene. Since its formation in the early nineties in Ventura\, California\, the band has toured virtually nonstop\, performing on average over 150 shows a year\, and has produced a sizable catalog of recorded music\, with sales of over 2 million albums to date. Early on\, during their legendary residency at the Derby nightclub in Los Angeles\, they reminded the world\, in the midst of the grunge era no less\, that it was still cool to swing. The band\, co-founded by singer Scotty Morris and drummer Kurt Sodergren\, was at the forefront of the swing revival of that time\, blending a vibrant fusion of the classic American sounds of jazz\, swing\, and dixieland\, with the energy and spirit of contemporary culture. \nBig Bad Voodoo Daddy’s all original core line-up includes Scotty Morris (lead vocals and guitar)\, Kurt Sodergren (drums)\, Dirk Shumaker (double bass and vocals)\, Andy Rowley (baritone saxophone and vocals)\, Glen “The Kid” Marhevka (trumpet)\, Karl Hunter (saxophones and clarinet) and Joshua Levy (piano and arranger).\nBig Bad Voodoo Daddy’s efforts to promote and revitalize swing music have taken shape as much more than a simple tribute. Taking inspiration from the creators of this uniquely American art form\, the band’s original horn-infused music and legendary high energy show introduces the genre to a new and younger generation while remaining cognizant and respectful of the music’s rich legacy. \nBig Bad Voodoo Daddy’s first phase of stardom featured an appearance in the 1996 indie film Swingers\, a movie that not only launched the careers of Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau\, but introduced Big Bad Voodoo Daddy to an audience beyond their Los Angeles base. The band’s music has appeared in countless films and television shows\, including The Wild\, Despicable Me\, Phineas & Ferb\, Friends\, Third Rock From The Sun\, Ally McBeal\, and So You Think You Can Dance. They have appeared live on Dancing With The Stars\, Late Night With Conan O’Brien\, NBC’s Christmas in Rockefeller Center\, The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day\nParade\, a remarkable seven appearances on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno\, and the Super Bowl XXXIII Halftime Show. The band has also appeared as special guests with many of the country’s most distinguished symphony orchestras\, and has performed for three U.S. Presidents. \nAfter 33 years\, 11 records\, over 3000 live shows\, and countless appearances in film and television\, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy is showing no signs of slowing down\, and is looking forward to sharing its music with new and old fans alike\, in 2026.

SUMMARY:The Bad Plus
DESCRIPTION:The Bad Plus has been a band for 26 years. That’s quite a long time! As we enter into year 27 – after a great deal of soul searching and consideration – we have decided to bring this chapter to a close. 2026 will be the final year of The Bad Plus. We share this news with heavy hearts\, but also with great pride in what we have accomplished. It has been a privilege to share our music with the world and we leave behind a body of work that we could not be more proud of. – With love and gratitude\, Reid and Dave \nThe Bad Plus are the ultimate originals. A democratic unit with a clear vision and a refusal to conform to convention. For the past two decades they have played with spirit and adventure\, made their own rules and done so with a bold sense of creativity and intent. Avoiding easy categorization\, The Bad Plus has won critical acclaim and a legion of fans worldwide with their unique sound and flair for live performance. The Bad Plus continues to push boundaries as founding members Reid Anderson (bass) and Dave King (drums) embark on a new piano-less incarnation of the band with Ben Monder (guitar) and Chris Speed (tenor saxophone) – instigating a new wave of excitement and anticipation within the band that is re-energizing their sound and inspiration. The Bad Plus have constantly searched to bridge genres and techniques while exploring the infinite possibilities of exceptional musicians working in perfect sync. The Bad Plus is set to release their 18th album via Mack Avenue Records on Friday\, November 8th. “Evolution is necessary for life and creativity\,” say Dave King and Reid Anderson. “We’ve evolved\, but we’re still The Bad Plus.”

SUMMARY:Noah Baerman & Friends
DESCRIPTION:Jazz pianist and composer Noah Baerman dedicates an evening to the music of one of his (and jazz music’s) biggest heroes\, Wayne Shorter (1933-2023).\n \nOn this night join Noah and his quartet\, featuring Matt Steckler (woodwinds)\, Amanda Monaco (guitar)\, Henry Lugo (bass)\, and Ryan Sands (drums). \nNoah Baerman is a jazz pianist\, composer\, educator\, and activist who has recorded eleven acclaimed albums under his own name and several more as a co-leader of cooperative ensembles including Trio 149\, Envisage Collective\, and Playdate\, earning praise from. Over fifteen years after nearly walking away from the piano due to his struggles with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS)\, an incurable connective tissue disorder with which he was born\, Noah recently released his eleventh recording under his own name\, the duo album Alter Ego\, documenting 20 years of collaboration with bassist Henry Lugo. This came on the heels of the double-album Love Right\, a tribute to his friend and former student Claire Randall that involved the participation of 100 musicians. \nA student of Kenny Barron’s while earning Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Jazz Studies from Rutgers University in the 1990s\, Baerman first earned national recognition for his 2003 release Patch Kit\, conceived around his struggles with EDS and featuring jazz legends Ron Carter and Ben Riley. Patch Kit raised awareness and funds for EDS and led to an invitation from Marian McPartland to be a guest on her long-running NPR program Piano Jazz in 2005. Subsequent works have included Soul Force\, a tribute to the life and message of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr.\, and Know Thyself\, an emotionally sweeping 65 minute suite made possible by a “New Jazz Works” grant from Chamber Music America/Doris Duke Foundation. Baerman’s recent CDs have received coverage from publications including Downbeat\, Jazz Times\, Jazziz\, the NYC Jazz Record\, WNPR’s Jazz Corridor\, the Village Voice\, and the Hartford Courant\, as well as an hour-long examination of his album The Rock and the Redemption on WNPR’s Colin McEnroe Show. \nSince 1998 he has lived with his wife\, visual artist Kate Ten Eyck\, in Middletown\, Connecticut\, where July 10\, 2020 was declared “Noah Baerman Day” by the city’s mayor and the Middletown Commission on the Arts in recognition of his a 2020 Arts Advocacy award. He teaches at several institutions including Wesleyan University\, where he has directed the Jazz Ensemble since 2007\, and has taught through their Graduate Liberal Studies Program since 2002\, as well as spending eighteen summers working with teenaged musicians through the Center for Creative Youth. His teaching concepts have been codified through ten well-regarded instructional books published by the Alfred Publishing Company. In 2012 he became Artistic Director of Resonant Motion\, Inc.\, an organization that seeks to explore and deepen connections between music and positive changes. \nThrough RMI he has overseen numerous educational workshops on the methodology behind socially conscious art\, founded the musically diverse imprint RMI Records\, and fostered and participated in interdisciplinary work. Since 2015 he has curated and hosted RMI’s interactive guest artist series\, Jazz Up Close\, and he been one of the primary architects of RMI’s initiative\, Claire’s Continuum a commissioning program in the memory of Claire Randall\, one of RMI’s charter team members. Early in the COVID-19 pandemic he was awarded an Artists Respond grant from the CT Office of the Arts and he recently completed the multi-year Musician-Aid Requests project\, for which he recorded forty videos\, many of them with socially distanced collaborators\, of songs requested by fans who donated to support musicians financially impacted by the pandemic. \nLinks: Website | Facebook (Personal) | Facebook (Music) | Instagram | YouTube

SUMMARY:Bokani Dyer Trio
DESCRIPTION:Bokani Dyer (piano\, vocals)\, Timothy Norton (bass)\, Lumanyano Mzi (drums) \nBokani Dyer is a multi-award-winning South African pianist\, composer\, and producer whose work traverses the intersections of jazz\, soul\, electronic music\, and African rhythm. A deeply thoughtful and boundary-pushing artist\, Dyer has spent over a decade cultivating a sound that is both deeply rooted in the South African jazz tradition and open to global and contemporary influences. \nBorn in 1986 in Gaborone\, Botswana — where his father\, renowned musician Steve Dyer\, lived in exile during apartheid — Bokani moved back to South Africa as a child in 1990. He grew up primarily in Johannesburg before pursuing formal music studies at the University of Cape Town\, graduating with distinction in jazz. Early recognition came in 2009 when he was named runner-up in the SAMRO Overseas Scholarship Competition\, earning a mentorship with celebrated American jazz pianist Jason Moran in New York. \nOver the years\, Dyer’s performance career has taken him across the globe. In 2014\, he performed at the opening of the London Jazz Festival and participated in a tribute to South African jazz pioneers The Blue Notes\, led by Shabaka Hutchings. A year later\, his Swiss-based ensemble\, the Bokani Dyer Swiss Quintet\, toured South Africa and Mozambique before heading to Switzerland for a series of acclaimed performances. He’s played at some of the world’s leading jazz platforms\, including the North Sea Jazz Festival\, Cape Town International Jazz Festival\, London Jazz Festival and Jazzahead in Germany\, and has graced iconic venues like Ronnie Scott’s in London and SFJAZZ in San Francisco. \nDyer has released six solo albums under his name\, each one charting a new course in his musical evolution. His 2010 debut Mirrors and 2011 follow-up Emancipate the Story signaled the arrival of a bold new voice in South African jazz. In 2015\, World Music introduced a wider palette\, integrating groove\, vocal elements\, and horn arrangements — and earned a South African Music Award (SAMA) nomination for Best Jazz Album. In 2018\, The Bokani Dyer Trio released Neo Native\, a critically acclaimed project that explored identity\, belonging\, and the complexities of home\, and went on to win the 2019 SAMA for Best Jazz Album. His 2020 release Kelenosi\, recorded during lockdown\, was an introspective\, self-produced work exploring isolation\, freedom\, and musical experimentation. \nIn 2023\, Dyer introduced a new musical persona — Radio Sechaba — and with it\, released a landmark project of the same name through Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood Recordings. Radio Sechaba is a celebration of community and connection. Seamlessly blending soul\, groove\, jazz\, and pan-African sounds\, the album interrogates themes of identity\, belonging\, and social justice. With standout tracks like “Move On” and “Mogaetsho\,” it has been praised for its warmth\, lyricism\, and sonic sophistication\, affirming Dyer’s place as one of South Africa’s most visionary artists.\nWhile his roots remain in jazz\, Dyer’s creative reach extends far beyond. He co-founded the groove/electronic band Soul Housing Project in 2007\, a shape-shifting ensemble that has performed across South Africa and internationally — including appearances at Lighthouse Festival in Croatia and the National Youth Jazz Festival. He has collaborated with South African jazz icons such as Feya Faku and has shared the stage with globally acclaimed artists like Shabaka Hutchings and Adam Glasser. \nDyer is also an accomplished producer and composer for film. He scored the 2017 romantic drama Catching Feelings and the upcoming 2025 feature Sabbatical. His work for stage includes collaborations with director Mkhululi Mabija and the launch of the Jazzafrika Legacy Sessions — a curated series at The Orbit Jazz Club that revived and celebrated South African jazz heritage through live transcription and performance. \nIn 2025\, Dyer’s trio embarked on a U.S. tour\, performing at leading jazz venues including Kuumbwa Jazz Center\, Sam First (Los Angeles)\, the Century Room (Tucson)\, and the Piedmont Piano Company (Oakland). These performances showcased his continued commitment to live improvisation and exploration — and reaffirmed his global resonance as a performer. \nWith a deep respect for legacy and a fearless openness to change\, Bokani Dyer continues to redefine the role of the modern jazz musician. Whether on stage\, in the studio\, or through his genre-bending persona Radio Sechaba\, he uses music as a tool for connection\, reflection\, and transformation. His work is a testament to the power of sound to bridge not just genres\, but geographies\, generations\, and inner worlds.
