DESCRIPTION:For over 24 years\, hosting public rehearsals every Monday night\, now at Guilford VFW Post 7666. \nTuxedo Junction was started in 1989 by Pete Jacobs (trumpet) and Will Tayler (drums)\, WWII veterans who set up an 8-piece Dixieland jazz band in the basement of the senior citizens center in Madison\, CT. Pat soon joined on piano. \nThe band quickly grew into a full swing band as Pete added big band arrangements and people joined: everyone from high school students to retired music teachers started to fill out the sections. Tuxedo Junction moved its practice home to the Westbrook Elks briefly\, and in 1997 Paul James suggested that Bill’s Seafood restaurant in Westbrook would be a great place to share the sounds of swing. After more than 20 years of Monday nights at Bill’s\, originally outnumbering the customers and staff before turning it into the most happening place on the Shoreline for a Monday night\, we moved outside to Town Greens\, Overlook Farm in Killingworth\, and the Guilford VFW. \nTuxedo Junction plays original big band arrangements from the 30’s through the present\, including charts from Count Basie\, Duke Ellington\, Glenn Miller\, Sy Zentner\, Buddy Rich\, Frank Sinatra\, Ella Fitzgerald\, and more. We focus on danceable tunes from swing to waltz\, foxtrot to two-step\, Latin and even some rock. The band has weekly open rehearsals at local venues on the Eastern Connecticut shoreline. The public is invited to dance and listen in at no charge. We are also available for hire at public and private events throughout Connecticut. \nAfter more than 1\,001 performances\, Tuxedo Junction has become a musical success story. We are now eighteen passionate musicians\, men and women of all ages\, following the great jazz tradition and warmly welcoming visiting jazz musicians to sit in.

In his interview for Vintage Guitar magazine’s February 2016 cover story\, Pat Metheny was asked to name some younger musicians who’d impressed him. “The best guitar player I’ve heard in maybe my entire life is floating around now\, Pasquale Grasso\,” said the jazz-guitar icon and NEA Jazz Master. “This guy is doing something so amazingly musical and so difficult. “Mostly what I hear now are guitar players who sound a little bit like me mixed with a little bit of [John Scofield] and a little bit of [Bill Frisell]\,” he continued. “What’s interesting about Pasquale is that he doesn’t sound anything like that at all. In a way\, it is a little bit of a throwback\, because his model—which is an incredible model to have—is Bud Powell. He has somehow captured the essence of that language from piano onto guitar in a way that almost nobody has ever addressed. He’s the most significant new guy I’ve heard in many\, many years.” \nAs he’s done with many rising jazz stars\, Metheny later invited Grasso over to his New York pad to jam and share some wisdom. DESCRIPTION:Max Johnson (bass)\, Nate Wooley (trumpet)\, Anna Webber (sax/flute)\, Yuma Uesaka (sax/clarinet)\, Lester St. Louis (cello)\, Jeff Davis (drums) \nComposer\, bassist\, and improviser Max Johnson presents his brand new sextet in the premiere of “Without Fear\,” a new concert-length work. The piece is a sprawling\, style-blurring composition that explores the many musical worlds Johnson has inhabited over the past fifteen years\, weaving together elements of jazz\, chamber music\, folk music\, free improvisation\, and progressive rock. \nThe work draws from Johnson’s experience as an in-demand performer and prolific composer\, having performed internationally and recorded with artists such as Anthony Braxton\, Geri Allen\, the Daedalus Quartet\, David Grisman\, Tyshawn Sorey\, Mary Halvorson\, Mivos Quartet\, and several alumni of Frank Zappa’s bands. Conceived as a musical ecosystem where diverse influences coexist and interact\, “Without Fear” highlights the individual voices and abilities of the ensemble while bringing Johnson’s expansive musical vision into a single personal work. \nAs a lover of comic books\, the piece is inspired by the Green Lantern\, whose power ring can create anything imaginable through sheer force of will\, so long as its bearer remains without fear. Like the ring itself\, the work imagines a creative space where the many musical languages Johnson inhabits can live together within a single composition. \nDescribed as “an intrepid composer\, architect of sound and beast of the bass…” (Brad Cohan\, NYC Jazz Record) composer-bassist Max Johnson has recorded seventeen albums as a leader and has performed more than two thousand concerts internationally. Johnson currently teaches music theory at Brooklyn College and is a doctoral candidate at the University of Pennsylvania.

DESCRIPTION:For over 24 years\, hosting public rehearsals every Monday night\, now at Guilford VFW Post 7666. \nTuxedo Junction was started in 1989 by Pete Jacobs (trumpet) and Will Tayler (drums)\, WWII veterans who set up an 8-piece Dixieland jazz band in the basement of the senior citizens center in Madison\, CT. Pat soon joined on piano. \nThe band quickly grew into a full swing band as Pete added big band arrangements and people joined: everyone from high school students to retired music teachers started to fill out the sections. Tuxedo Junction moved its practice home to the Westbrook Elks briefly\, and in 1997 Paul James suggested that Bill’s Seafood restaurant in Westbrook would be a great place to share the sounds of swing. After more than 20 years of Monday nights at Bill’s\, originally outnumbering the customers and staff before turning it into the most happening place on the Shoreline for a Monday night\, we moved outside to Town Greens\, Overlook Farm in Killingworth\, and the Guilford VFW. \nTuxedo Junction plays original big band arrangements from the 30’s through the present\, including charts from Count Basie\, Duke Ellington\, Glenn Miller\, Sy Zentner\, Buddy Rich\, Frank Sinatra\, Ella Fitzgerald\, and more. We focus on danceable tunes from swing to waltz\, foxtrot to two-step\, Latin and even some rock. The band has weekly open rehearsals at local venues on the Eastern Connecticut shoreline. The public is invited to dance and listen in at no charge. We are also available for hire at public and private events throughout Connecticut. \nAfter more than 1\,001 performances\, Tuxedo Junction has become a musical success story. We are now eighteen passionate musicians\, men and women of all ages\, following the great jazz tradition and warmly welcoming visiting jazz musicians to sit in.
