SUMMARY:Sarah Hanahan Quartet
DESCRIPTION:DownBeat’s #1 Rising Star altoist brings her quartet to The Side Door for an electrifying night of modern jazz. \n\n\n\n\nSarah Hanahan is one of the most exciting young voices in jazz today. Raised in Marlborough\, Massachusetts\, she picked up the alto saxophone at age eight\, introduced to music by her father\, a drummer who passed down his love of the music early on. She earned her bachelor’s degree from the Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz at the Hartt School\, studying under Abraham Burton\, Rene McLean\, Nat Reeves\, and Javon Jackson\, and went on to complete her master’s at The Juilliard School. \nHanahan was featured in the first-ever class of NPR’s Jazz Night in America Youngbloods series\, hosted by Christian McBride\, and has worked with Jeff “Tain” Watts\, Nat Reeves\, Steve Davis\, Billy Hart\, Dee Dee Bridgewater\, and Marc Cary\, among many others. She plays regularly at Smalls Jazz Club\, Dizzy’s Club\, Smoke Jazz Club\, and Birdland\, and has performed with the Grammy-winning Mingus Big Band and the Sherrie Maricle and the Diva Orchestra. Her debut album Among Giants\, featuring Marc Cary\, Nat Reeves\, and Jeff “Tain” Watts\, earned five stars in DownBeat and was named one of their Top Albums of the Year in 2024. The following year\, she was named DownBeat’s #1 Rising Star Alto Saxophonist\, an honor she has now claimed in consecutive years. \nWith a sound that blends lyrical nuance and an ebullient\, joyful stage presence\, Hanahan represents the very best of jazz’s next generation. This is a rare opportunity to experience one of the most acclaimed young musicians in jazz today in an intimate setting. \nThe Side Door Jazz Club is a dedicated jazz listening room located inside the historic Old Lyme Inn\, 85 Lyme Street\, Old Lyme\, CT. Tickets are reserved seating. Guests dining at the Old Lyme Inn prior to the show receive 10% off their dinner bill.

SUMMARY:Tuxedo Junction
DESCRIPTION:For over 24 years\, hosting public rehearsals every Monday night\, now at Guilford VFW Post 7666. \nTuxedo Junction was started in 1989 by Pete Jacobs (trumpet) and Will Tayler (drums)\, WWII veterans who set up an 8-piece Dixieland jazz band in the basement of the senior citizens center in Madison\, CT. Pat soon joined on piano. \nThe band quickly grew into a full swing band as Pete added big band arrangements and people joined: everyone from high school students to retired music teachers started to fill out the sections. Tuxedo Junction moved its practice home to the Westbrook Elks briefly\, and in 1997 Paul James suggested that Bill’s Seafood restaurant in Westbrook would be a great place to share the sounds of swing. After more than 20 years of Monday nights at Bill’s\, originally outnumbering the customers and staff before turning it into the most happening place on the Shoreline for a Monday night\, we moved outside to Town Greens\, Overlook Farm in Killingworth\, and the Guilford VFW. \nTuxedo Junction plays original big band arrangements from the 30’s through the present\, including charts from Count Basie\, Duke Ellington\, Glenn Miller\, Sy Zentner\, Buddy Rich\, Frank Sinatra\, Ella Fitzgerald\, and more. We focus on danceable tunes from swing to waltz\, foxtrot to two-step\, Latin and even some rock. The band has weekly open rehearsals at local venues on the Eastern Connecticut shoreline. The public is invited to dance and listen in at no charge. We are also available for hire at public and private events throughout Connecticut. \nAfter more than 1\,001 performances\, Tuxedo Junction has become a musical success story. We are now eighteen passionate musicians\, men and women of all ages\, following the great jazz tradition and warmly welcoming visiting jazz musicians to sit in.

SUMMARY:Nat Reeves Sextet "Now in Time" Album Release Show
DESCRIPTION:Nat Reeves brings his sextet to The Side Door\, the same all-star group from his new album Now in Time. \n\n\n\n\nNat Reeves – Bass\nEric Alexander – Tenor Saxophone\nSteve Davis – Trombone\nEddie Henderson – Trumpet\nCaelan Cardello – Piano\nJeff “Tain” Watts – Drums \nFor over 40 years\, Nat Reeves has been one of the most respected bassists in jazz. Early in his career he performed with Jackie McLean\, Benny Golson\, Donald Byrd\, Art Taylor\, Mulgrew Miller\, Kenny Kirkland\, and Kenny Drew. He became a longtime member of Kenny Garrett’s group beginning in 1994\, and has worked and recorded with Pharoah Sanders\, George Coleman\, Harold Mabern\, George Cables\, and Joe Farnsworth\, among many others. He has released three albums as a leader\, State of Emergency\, Blue Ridge\, and now Now in Time\, released April 17\, 2026 on Cellar Live. \nNow in Time brings together an extraordinary lineup spanning multiple generations of jazz\, twelve tracks running just over an hour that move comfortably between Reeves’ own original compositions and a thoughtful selection of standards\, including “On Green Dolphin Street\,” “Alice in Wonderland\,” and a tribute to Marvin Gaye with “The Creator Has a Master Plan.” Throughout the record\, Reeves’ bass acts as a quiet narrator\, steering the music’s direction with the kind of unhurried confidence that comes from four decades on the bandstand. Critics have praised the album as a recording that rewards close\, attentive listening\, one that resists the pace of casual consumption and instead invites listeners to settle into a long evening built on the trust and shared musical language of these six players. \nThis is a rare chance to hear the album’s celebrated lineup perform the music live\, in an intimate setting.

SUMMARY:Jon Batiste
DESCRIPTION:Jon Batiste is a five-time Grammy Award-winning and Academy Award-winning singer\, songwriter\, and composer.\n\nBatiste released his eighth studio album\, Beethoven Blues (Batiste Piano Series\, Vol. 1)\, in November 2024 via Verve Records/Interscope. Marking the first installment in his new solo piano series\, the project showcases Batiste’s interpolations of some of Beethoven’s most iconic works\, reimagined through an expansive lens. These reimagined classics embody the indomitable spirit of the blues\, and—true to Batiste’s “message of open-armed inclusivity” (New York Times)—embrace a broad genre spectrum.\n\nBeethoven Blues (Batiste Piano Series\, Vol. 1) follows World Music Radio (released August 2023 via Verve)\, which draws inspiration from Batiste’s mission to create community and expand culture with the power of music. Featuring collaborators including Jon Bellion\, Lana Del Rey\, Lil’ Wayne\, and more\, the album received positive reviews from critics who praised the project for its universal message and genre-defying sound. Hailed by NPR as “a sprawling exploration of what global music can sound like\,” the album received a total of five Grammy nominations\, including Album of the Year. Batiste kicked off his first-ever headlining tour\, Uneasy Tour: Purifying the Airwaves for the People\, the following year.\n\nBatiste’s innovative score is featured in Jason Reitman’s SATURDAY NIGHT\, which released in theaters in October 2024. Depicting the chaotic 90 minutes leading up to the first broadcast of Saturday Night Live in 1975\, the film is underscored by Batiste’s musical masterpiece\, which features a blend of jazz\, classical\, and contemporary elements. Batiste composed and produced the music live on the soundstage in front of the cast and crew\, perfectly capturing the intensity and unpredictability of the show’s debut episode.\n\nBatiste was the subject of Matthew Heineman’s moving 2023 documentary AMERICAN SYMPHONY\, released on Netflix in partnership with Barack Obama and Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground. Batiste and Grammy winner Dan Wilson penned the emotional song “It Never Went Away” for the film\, which earned an Oscar nomination for Best Original Song and two Grammy nominations.\n\nIn 2021\, Batiste released We Are\, which was nominated for 11 Grammy Awards across seven different categories\, a first in Grammy history. He went on to win five Grammy Awards that evening\, including Album of the Year. In 2018\, he received a Grammy nomination for Best American Roots\, and in 2020\, he received two Grammy nods for the albums: CHRONOLOGY OF A DREAM: LIVE AT THE VILLAGE VANGUARD and MEDITATIONS (with Cory Wong). Batiste also composed and performed music for the Disney/Pixar film SOUL\, for which he won an Academy Award for Best Original Score alongside fellow composers Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. SOUL also earned Batiste a Golden Globe\, a BAFTA\, an NAACP Image Award\, and a Critic’s Choice Award. From 2015 until 2022\, Batiste served as the bandleader and musical director of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on CBS.
