DESCRIPTION:For over 24 years\, hosting public rehearsals every Monday night\, now at Guilford VFW Post 7666. \nTuxedo Junction was started in 1989 by Pete Jacobs (trumpet) and Will Tayler (drums)\, WWII veterans who set up an 8-piece Dixieland jazz band in the basement of the senior citizens center in Madison\, CT. Pat soon joined on piano. \nThe band quickly grew into a full swing band as Pete added big band arrangements and people joined: everyone from high school students to retired music teachers started to fill out the sections. Tuxedo Junction moved its practice home to the Westbrook Elks briefly\, and in 1997 Paul James suggested that Bill’s Seafood restaurant in Westbrook would be a great place to share the sounds of swing. After more than 20 years of Monday nights at Bill’s\, originally outnumbering the customers and staff before turning it into the most happening place on the Shoreline for a Monday night\, we moved outside to Town Greens\, Overlook Farm in Killingworth\, and the Guilford VFW. \nTuxedo Junction plays original big band arrangements from the 30’s through the present\, including charts from Count Basie\, Duke Ellington\, Glenn Miller\, Sy Zentner\, Buddy Rich\, Frank Sinatra\, Ella Fitzgerald\, and more. We focus on danceable tunes from swing to waltz\, foxtrot to two-step\, Latin and even some rock. The band has weekly open rehearsals at local venues on the Eastern Connecticut shoreline. The public is invited to dance and listen in at no charge. We are also available for hire at public and private events throughout Connecticut. \nAfter more than 1\,001 performances\, Tuxedo Junction has become a musical success story. We are now eighteen passionate musicians\, men and women of all ages\, following the great jazz tradition and warmly welcoming visiting jazz musicians to sit in.

DESCRIPTION:Andrea Wolper (voice)\, Ursel Schlicht (piano)\, Ken Filiano (bass)\, Lou Grassi (drums) \nDimensionality Quartet is four acclaimed veterans of jazz and improvised music: pianist Ursel Schlicht\, bassist Ken Filiano\, drummer Lou Grassi\, and vocalist Andrea Wolper. While each member of the group had played with the others in any number of configurations throughout the years\, they had never performed as a unit until Schlicht\, inspired by the free-thinking improvising pianist-composer Connie Crothers (1938–2016)\, organized the quartet\, naming it Dimensionality after Crothers’ frequent statement about life and music: “It’s dimensional!” \nThe chemistry among the foursome was instantaneous\, and since their debut at the 2017 Kassel and Göttingen (Germany) jazz festivals and subsequent New York City appearances (including most recently at The Stone)\, it has only grown—dimensionally. Dimensionality moves freely\, intuitively\, expansively from pure improvisation to spontaneous explorations of composed music and texts\, bringing emotional generosity and the joy of discovery to their performances. \nDimensionality’s appearance at Pioneer Valley Jazz Shares is part of a tour that includes Edgefest (Ann Arbor) and the Bop Shop (Rochester). \nwww.urselschlicht.com • www.kenfiliano.com • www.lougrassi.com • www.andreawolper.com

DESCRIPTION:Firehouse 12 is proud to announce our 2026 Fall Jazz Series. \nOur series begins with the Mitch Marcus Quintet\, who last played for us in 2022. Firehouse 12 favorites Joe Fonda\, Anna Webber\, and Myra Melford will return as well as many other familiar musicians. Laura Ann Singh and Gregg Bendian help to round out the series with groups that are new to our stage. Wadada Leo Smith and Sylvie Courvoisier bring their collaboration on November 13th\, the first time that Wadada has played as a part of our series since 2010. \nPerformances are on Friday nights at 8:30pm and 10:00pm. Tickets for each performance can be purchased individually\, with prices at $20 for our early shows and $15 for our late shows. SUMMARY:Make Jazz Trill Again
DESCRIPTION:For the 2026–2027 academic year\, the Center for the Arts welcomes Make Jazz Trill Again as our partner in developing a series of performances\, workshops\, and outside-the-box curriculum to explore jazz as a communal language of trust-building across differences—a genre rooted in Black culture and a civic project of fostering relationships across generations and discovering new ways to be in resonance with each other. \nMake Jazz Trill Again is a cultural movement. Started by jazz artist Melanie Charles in 2016\, it was initiated as a modest hashtag intended to reinvigorate the independent jazz scene in the digital age\, but has since grown into a vibrant network of projects that include producing and curating performances\, festivals\, and jam sessions\, collaborative music-making experiences\, workshops\, and a widely-followed podcast series that centers on artist empowerment and community connection. The roots of the project trace back to Charles’ experience as a student at The New School in New York\, where she initiated the institution’s first “Gender and Jazz” workshops\, challenging traditional instrumentation\, incorporating emerging technologies into performance\, and presenting jazz in unconventional venues to expand access and reach broader audiences. Today\, the Make Jazz Trill Again team also includes producer and musician Yunie Mojica and documentary filmmaker and producer Darah Golub. \nWith Make Jazz Trill Again\, the Center for the Arts will spend the year centering collective process as an essential element in artmaking. We welcome their organization as a way to decenter the individualism that burdens art-making today. Wesleyan’s campus has always been a space for convening\, communing\, reuniting\, and gathering as an essential component of learning and growing collectively. Make Jazz Trill Again broadens the aperture of what artistic process can look like and exemplifies the bridging of many practices required to create interdisciplinary works and spaces of belonging. \nThroughout the year\, Make Jazz Trill Again will present and develop new work through three campus engagements\, each anchored by a public “town hall” that invites open discussion and exploration of themes related to the residency\, amplifying the lessons jazz can teach us—about process\, creative practice\, and collaboration—that are applicable well beyond the limits of the music field.

Firehouse 12 favorites Joe Fonda\, Anna Webber\, and Myra Melford will return as well as many other familiar musicians. Laura Ann Singh and Gregg Bendian help to round out the series with groups that are new to our stage. Wadada Leo Smith and Sylvie Courvoisier bring their collaboration on November 13th\, the first time that Wadada has played as a part of our series since 2010. \nPerformances are on Friday nights at 8:30pm and 10:00pm. Original music steeped in jazz and sparkling with rhythms and instruments from the Caribbean\, Eastern Europe and the Arabic world. Melodic and driving\, thoughtful but audience-friendly. Dr. Julian’s Yes Yes has it both ways. \nJulian Gerstin\, percussion\, composer\, is a veteran of many jazz\, African and Latin bands. He has appeared with jazz icons Sheila Jordan and Charles Neville; Afropop stars Orlando Julius\, Baba Ken Okulolo and Zulu Spear; and has also worked in Eastern European and Arabic music\, punk\, funk\, choral music\, and theater composition. In addition to the Sextet\, Julian currently leads the Brazilian group Sambaganza and performs traditional Puerto Rican drumming with Bomba de Aquí. Much of Julian’s music stems from his two years living in Martinique\, studying and performing traditional music. Julian has an MFA in Music Composition and\, yes\, a PhD. \nWith Yes Yes\, Dr. Julian takes a step beyond his previous group\, the JG Sextet. That group released its third CD\, Songbirds of the Deep Sea\, on Truth Revolution Records in 2025\, but already Julian was looking for musicians to treat his compositions more adventurously\, as starting points rather than finished works. The personnel of Yes Yes is flexible\, but all of the musicians enjoy taking chances. Current members include: \nJason Robinson\, saxophones\, works primarily with his group the Janus Ensemble\, which includes Liberty Ellman\, Angelica Sanchez and Ches Smith\, among others. The group has released four CDs of Jason’s socomplexly beautiful compositions. He has appeared with George Lewis\, Anthony Davius\, Myra Melford\, Rudresh Mahanthappa\, Raphe Malik\, Toots and the Maytals\, and numerous other contemporary jazz and world music luminaries. Jason is a professor of music at Amherst College. \nPaul Austerlitz\, bass clarinet\, is one of the country’s leading jazz voices on his instrument. Paul’s travels have taken him to the Dominican Republic and Haiti\, where he worked in numerous top bands. He composes and performs with his own group\, Voudou Jazz. As a scholar\, Paul has published books on Black and Diasporic music and Dominican merengue. \nDon Anderson\, trumpet\, is a veteran of numerous groups including the Vermont Jazz Center Big Band\, Zara Bode Little Big Band\, Green Street Quintet\, Dr. Burma\, and New England Transcendental Brass Band.  \nAndrew Wilcox\, piano\, is the group’s youngest member. A protegé of Grammy Award-winning pianist Zaccai Curtis\, Andrew is quickly establishing himself as a rising star in both jazz and Latin music circles. \nWes Brown\, bass: Wes’s first professional gig\, at the age of eighteen\, was two years on the road with jazz legend Earl “Fatha” Hines.
