SUMMARY:Darryl Yokley Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Grammy-winning saxophonist Darryl Yokley is coming to The Side Door — and this is not one to miss. \nDarryl Yokley- Saxophones\nZaccai Curtis- Piano\nLuques Curtis- Bass\nWayne Smith Jr.- Drums\n\nDarryl Yokley has drawn praise from the New York Times\, Downbeat Magazine\, and beyond for a sound that resists easy labels. Jazz critic Brent Black put it best: Yokley is someone who “side steps standard categorization with ease\,” while Downbeat’s Dave Cantor described him as “nakedly shuttling emotion through his instrument.” However you try to define it\, the consensus is the same — there is no one else who sounds quite like him. \nThe son of an African-American father and a first-generation Mexican mother\, Yokley has woven his multicultural background into a compositional voice all his own. After touring with Motown legends the Four Tops\, the Temptations\, and the O’Jays\, he moved to New York and quickly established himself as both a compelling bandleader and in-demand sideman\, performing at venues including the Kennedy Center and Lincoln Center. He has shared the stage with Eddie Palmieri\, Orrin Evans\, Ralph Peterson Jr.\, and Nasheet Waits\, among many others. \nHis latest album\, Un Mundo en Soledad\, pays homage to Gabriel García Márquez’s beloved masterpiece One Hundred Years of Solitude\, with song titles drawn from passages in the book and ordered according to the story’s chronology. The record landed on multiple Best of 2024 lists and earned Yokley some of the strongest reviews of his career. \nThe Side Door Jazz Club is a dedicated jazz listening room located inside the historic Old Lyme Inn\, 85 Lyme Street\, Old Lyme\, CT. Tickets are reserved seating. Guests dining at the Old Lyme Inn restaurant prior to the show receive 10% off their dinner bill.

DESCRIPTION:Instantiations\, formerly known as Improvisations Now\, is a monthly series of concerts conceived and programmed by Joe Morris (guitarist\, bassist\, improviser\, composer-wearer of many hats). Joe invites dynamic\, innovative musicians – important members of the global improvised music scene – and performs with them. The music is completely improvised. Every concert\, every instance is a unique experience. Morris will play bass in this final installment of the season. \nGeneral Admission $15 / Members $12 / Students $8 \nJoin us on Facebook and Instagram to get the latest!

SUMMARY:Tuxedo Junction
DESCRIPTION:For over 24 years\, hosting public rehearsals every Monday night\, now at Guilford VFW Post 7666. \nTuxedo Junction was started in 1989 by Pete Jacobs (trumpet) and Will Tayler (drums)\, WWII veterans who set up an 8-piece Dixieland jazz band in the basement of the senior citizens center in Madison\, CT. Pat soon joined on piano. \nThe band quickly grew into a full swing band as Pete added big band arrangements and people joined: everyone from high school students to retired music teachers started to fill out the sections. Tuxedo Junction moved its practice home to the Westbrook Elks briefly\, and in 1997 Paul James suggested that Bill’s Seafood restaurant in Westbrook would be a great place to share the sounds of swing. After more than 20 years of Monday nights at Bill’s\, originally outnumbering the customers and staff before turning it into the most happening place on the Shoreline for a Monday night\, we moved outside to Town Greens\, Overlook Farm in Killingworth\, and the Guilford VFW. \nTuxedo Junction plays original big band arrangements from the 30’s through the present\, including charts from Count Basie\, Duke Ellington\, Glenn Miller\, Sy Zentner\, Buddy Rich\, Frank Sinatra\, Ella Fitzgerald\, and more. We focus on danceable tunes from swing to waltz\, foxtrot to two-step\, Latin and even some rock. The band has weekly open rehearsals at local venues on the Eastern Connecticut shoreline. The public is invited to dance and listen in at no charge. We are also available for hire at public and private events throughout Connecticut. \nAfter more than 1\,001 performances\, Tuxedo Junction has become a musical success story. We are now eighteen passionate musicians\, men and women of all ages\, following the great jazz tradition and warmly welcoming visiting jazz musicians to sit in.

SUMMARY:Allison\, Cardenas\, & Nash
DESCRIPTION:Three of New York’s finest bring their acclaimed drummerless trio to The Side Door for a night of intimate\, conversational jazz. \nBen Allison · Bass\nSteve Cardenas · Guitar\nTed Nash · Saxophone \nModeled after the intimate\, drummerless trios of Jimmy Giuffre in the 1950s\, Allison\, Cardenas & Nash have spent over a decade building one of the most distinctive sounds in jazz — deeply conversational\, rooted in blues and folk\, and wide open to wherever the music leads. The trio arrives fresh off the April release of Triological on Sunnyside Records — their most personal album yet\, featuring original compositions from each member for the first time. \nIn a career spanning over 30 years\, Ben Allison has developed an instantly identifiable sound as a bassist\, composer\, producer\, and educator. JazzTimes recognized him as “a visionary composer\, adventurous improviser\, and strong organizational force on the New York City jazz scene.” He founded the Jazz Composers Collective at just 25\, has appeared on over 100 albums\, and composed the theme for NPR’s On the Media\, heard by 1.5 million listeners a week. \nSteve Cardenas began his musical career in Kansas City and has been a fixture of the New York jazz scene since 1995. A longtime member of the Paul Motian Electric Bebop Band\, Charlie Haden Liberation Music Orchestra\, and Steve Swallow Quintet\, he is also a respected educator on faculty at The New School and co-author of the Thelonious Monk Fakebook — the first time all of Monk’s compositions were assembled in a single volume. \nA two-time Grammy Award winner and longtime member of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis\, Ted Nash has had an extraordinary career as a performer\, composer\, and conductor. DownBeat called him “one of the most together saxophonists of his generation.” His 2017 big band album Presidential Suite\, inspired by great political speeches of the 20th century\, earned him two Grammys and the Jazz Journalists Association’s Composer of the Year award.

SUMMARY:Ed Fast & Conga Bop
DESCRIPTION:Ten world-class musicians\, one intimate room — Ed Fast & Conga Bop bring their Afro-Cuban jazz to The Side Door. \n\n\n\n\nEd Fast · Drums\nDina DiMarco · Vocals\nSteve Davis · Trombone\nJosh Bruneau · Trumpet\nWayne Escoffery · Tenor Saxophone\nAmy Millan · Piano\nGianni Gardner · Guitar\nMatt Dwonszyk · Bass\nJorge Fuentes · Congas\nAnthony Carrillo · Timbales \nA Hartford Courant favorite and a fixture of the Connecticut jazz scene for over two decades\, Ed Fast & Conga Bop fuse Afro-Cuban rhythms and hard-bop harmony into a sound that is impossible to sit still for. The band grooves through a rich palette of Latin rhythms — rumba\, cha cha cha\, son\, and Afro-Cuban 6/8 — drawing on the music of legends like Cal Tjader\, Tito Puente\, and Hilton Ruiz alongside Fast’s own soulful originals. \nBandleader Ed Fast is a Hartt School-trained multi-instrumentalist equally at home on drums\, timbales\, congas\, and vibraphone. His career has taken him from the pit orchestras of Broadway road shows touring Russia\, China\, Japan\, and South Korea\, to backup bands accompanying Aretha Franklin\, Paul Anka\, and Chita Rivera at Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun\, to the stage of New York’s Iridium Jazz Club. The Hartford Courant called him “a celebrated figure in town” and Latin Beat Magazine has praised the band’s unique sound. \nJoining Fast is an exceptional cast of musicians. Vocalist Dina DiMarco brings an electrifying presence and a wide-ranging repertoire spanning jazz standards and Broadway classics. Trombonist Steve Davis is one of the most recorded and respected voices in jazz\, with credits spanning Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers lineage and dozens of acclaimed recordings as a leader. Tenor saxophonist Wayne Escoffery has established himself as one of the most in-demand voices in contemporary jazz\, with a long association with the Mingus Big Band and Tom Harrell. Rounding out the ensemble are some of the region’s finest rhythm section players and percussionists\, creating the kind of layered\, infectious groove that has made Conga Bop one of New England’s most beloved live acts. \nThis is a big band experience in an intimate room — the kind of night that gets people out of their seats.
