SUMMARY:Anders Nilsson’s Hesa Gun
DESCRIPTION:Anders Nilsson (guitar)\, Sam Kulik (trombone)\, David Ambrosio (bass)\, Vinnie Sperrazza (drums) \n“Swedish-born and New York-based experimental guitarist Anders Nilsson produces music that is at once bracingly direct and utterly unclassifiable.” – Matt Miller \nAs an electric\, acoustic\, and 11-string alto guitarist\, he has performed at festivals and concerts throughout Europe and North America. His solo guitar music is featured on the albums Night Guitar (2012) and Äventyr (2022). His own band Hesa Gun features his own compositions together with Sam Kulik – trombone\, David Ambrosio- bass\, Vinnie Sperazza – drums. He plays on over 40 albums and has performed and/or recorded with many artists such as Mohsen Namjoo\, Gordon Beeferman\, Jason Kao Hwang\, Kalabalik\, Paquito D’Rivera\, Elliott Sharp\, Fay Victor\, and Angelblood. Nilsson’s work as a composer has produced 100+ compositions ranging from brief to epic solo works to large experimental ensemble works\, many of which have been released on several acclaimed albums. He has also written music for string quartet\, short films\, butoh dance performances and theatre. \nAmerican musician Sam Kulik was born in western Massachusetts\, but moved to Ohio in 2000 to study at Oberlin College. Upon moving to New York City in 2004\, he quickly established himself among the city’s improvisational music scene\, volunteering at John Zorn’s venue The Stone\, and collaborating with experimental rock bands such as Skeletons and Parts & Labor. Primarily playing trombone\, Kulik has also been proficient at a variety of other instruments\, including tuba\, bass\, and electric guitar\, and has played in a variety of musical projects ranging from folk to indie rock to classical to free jazz. Kulik’s 2012 album\, Escape from Society\, was inspired by the “song poem” phenomenon\, and demonstrated his prowess as an offbeat songwriter. Kulik has guested on several recordings by N.Y.C. improv prankster duo Talibam!\, and was co-credited on their 2011 album Discover AtlantASS\, as well as Double Automatism\, their 2015 collaboration with Japanese Fluxus-associated composer Yasunao Tone. \nFor the past 30 years\, David Ambrosio has been one of New York City’s finest freelance musicians and educators. His current working projects as a leader are CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE: Blue Note Records in the Progressive ‘60s\, featuring Grammy nominated saxophonist Donny McCaslin and drumming legend Victor Lewis; and the David Ambrosio Trio\, featuring saxophonist Loren Stillman. In addition to his own ensembles\, he is the co-leader of the David Ambrosio/Russ Meissner Sextet\, 40Twenty\, and Grupo Los Santos\, as well as being a part of many other groups including George Schuller’s Circle Wide\, the Matt Renzi Trio\, Eri Yamamoto Trio\, and Jazz at Lincoln Center’s BMI/New York Jazz Orchestra led by Ted Nash and Andy Farber. He has performed with such jazz greats as Kenny Werner\, Joe Lovano\, Terry Gibbs\, Buddy DeFranco\, George Garzone\, Joseph Jarmon\, and Ralph Alessi. David has also frequently toured in Central and South East Asia on behalf of the US State Department as a performer and clinician. Currently he is on the faculty at Hunter College and the New York Jazz Workshop in NYC. \nVinnie Sperrazza is a Brooklyn-based jazz drummer. Born in 1979 in Utica\, New York\, music and drumming is a family affair for Sperrazza. His father plays and taught drums in Central New York\, and his mother sang at church and did live sound for his father’s bands. He completed his Bachelor of Arts degree at William Paterson University in 2002 and moved to Brooklyn later that year. From 2004 until 2013\, Sperrazza was focused on teaching drumset and jazz ensembles\, privately and at local music schools. Meanwhile\, he continued his musical studies in harmony\, counterpoint\, and composition with Paul Caputo. Sperrazza made a few noted recordings at this time\, including John McNeil’s Hush Point and 40twenty with trombonist Jacob Garchik. By 2014\, when Apocryphal\, his first album of original compositions was released\, Sperrazza was moving away from teaching to focus on performing. He has made a mark on the New York jazz community with his swinging\, enthusiastic playing and his commitment to original projects. In 2017\, he premiered the Mark Morris Dance Group’s Pepperland in Liverpool\, England\, with a score by pianist and composer Ethan Iverson\, and has continued to tour with the company. He is a member of the Hank Roberts Sextet and Hank Roberts Trio\, tours and records with the groups Landline\, the Choir Invisible\, Curtis-Garabedian-Sperrazza\, Hearing Things\, Vinnie Sperrazza-Jacob Sacks-Masa Kamaguchi PLAY\, and trioTrio\, works with bandleaders/composers Mike McGinnis and Michael Formanek\, writes music\, leads his own bands Apocryphal and Small Cities\, organizes improvising groups\, and continues his musical studies.

SUMMARY:Civil Disobedience
DESCRIPTION:Civil Disobedience\, created by New York bassist David Ambrosio\, is a project that has been carefully crafted to showcase the compositions of progressive jazz maestros from the late 60s Blue Note Era\, such as Bobby Hutcherson\, Jackie McLean Stanley Cowell\, Harold Land\, Joe Chambers\, Duke Pearson\, and James Spaulding. Aside from leader Ambrosio\, members of the band include Donny McCaslin on tenor and soprano saxophones\, Jason Palmer on trumpet\, Bruce Barth on piano\, and Rudy Royston on drums. \nIn a reflection of a past era marked by social upheaval and civil unrest\, the compositions that form the core of Civil Disobedience’s playlist lay dormant for decades\, unheard and unappreciated at the time of their creation. Over fifty years later\, America is at a crossroads again\, witnessing significant parallels in social movements reminiscent of that transformative era. It is against this backdrop that the once-overlooked music of the late 60s Blue Note Era gains a newfound relevance. \n“David Ambrosio is going to bring a band of some of the best musicians on the New York scene today – Donny McCaslin\, Bruce Barth\, Rudy Royston and Jason Palmer – who will play their hearts out in sharing this music of protest and civil unrest on the Iron Horse stage\,” says Ruth Griggs\, president of the Northampton Jazz Festival. “Musicians are poets\, and I’m grateful that these fine musicians are coming to Northampton to play this poetry of protest during such an unsettling time in our nation’s history.” \nAmbrosio is bringing his band to Western Massachusetts on a mini-tour\, which includes a teaching workshop at Amherst College on Sunday afternoon the 12th and with Ambrosio as a sideman in a Pioneer Valley Jazz Shares concert in Holyoke on the 11th. \nThe April 12 concert at the Iron Horse will preview the first album produced by the group\, entitled “Civil Disobedience\,” with a release date of May 16. \nFor the past 30 years\, bassist and band leader Ambrosio has been a New York City freelance musician and educator. With degrees in classical composition and jazz performance\, David has a broad musical palate that has become even more intensified by his travel experiences. In 2001\, he performed in Cuba with Grupo Los Santos\, Max Pollack’s Rumbatap\, as well as numerous local Afro/Cuban folkloric music and dance ensembles. Not long after\, he began an intense study of Afro/Cuban Bata drumming with master drummers Miguel Bernal\, Carlos Gomez\, and Carlos Aldama. \nAmbrosio is also the co-leader of the David Ambrosio/Russ Meissner Sextet\, 40Twenty\, and Grupo Los Santos\, as well as being a part of many other groups including George Schuller’s Circle Wide\, the Matt Renzi Trio\, Eri Yamamoto Trio\, and Jazz at Lincoln Center’s BMI/New York Jazz Orchestra led by Ted Nash and Andy Farber. He has performed with such jazz greats as Kenny Werner\, Joe Lovano\, Terry Gibbs\, Buddy DeFranco\, George Garzone\, Joseph Jarmon\, and Ralph Alessi \nAmbrosio’s third recording as leader\, “Four on the Road” (Fresh Sound Records\, 2018)\, was praised as “Swinging brilliance in the light of interactive engagement\, creating music that challenges while remaining largely accessible” by Dan Bilawsky of All About Jazz. \nAmbrosio has also frequently toured in Central and South East Asia on behalf of the US State Department as a performer and clinician. Currently he is on the faculty at Hunter College and the New York Jazz Workshop in NYC. \nTickets for the April 12 concert are $35 in advance ($42 including all fees) and $40 at the door. SUMMARY:Tuxedo Junction
DESCRIPTION:For over 24 years\, hosting public rehearsals every Monday night\, now at Guilford VFW Post 7666. \nTuxedo Junction was started in 1989 by Pete Jacobs (trumpet) and Will Tayler (drums)\, WWII veterans who set up an 8-piece Dixieland jazz band in the basement of the senior citizens center in Madison\, CT. Pat soon joined on piano. \nThe band quickly grew into a full swing band as Pete added big band arrangements and people joined: everyone from high school students to retired music teachers started to fill out the sections. Tuxedo Junction moved its practice home to the Westbrook Elks briefly\, and in 1997 Paul James suggested that Bill’s Seafood restaurant in Westbrook would be a great place to share the sounds of swing. After more than 20 years of Monday nights at Bill’s\, originally outnumbering the customers and staff before turning it into the most happening place on the Shoreline for a Monday night\, we moved outside to Town Greens\, Overlook Farm in Killingworth\, and the Guilford VFW. \nTuxedo Junction plays original big band arrangements from the 30’s through the present\, including charts from Count Basie\, Duke Ellington\, Glenn Miller\, Sy Zentner\, Buddy Rich\, Frank Sinatra\, Ella Fitzgerald\, and more. We focus on danceable tunes from swing to waltz\, foxtrot to two-step\, Latin and even some rock. The band has weekly open rehearsals at local venues on the Eastern Connecticut shoreline. The public is invited to dance and listen in at no charge. We are also available for hire at public and private events throughout Connecticut. \nAfter more than 1\,001 performances\, Tuxedo Junction has become a musical success story. We are now eighteen passionate musicians\, men and women of all ages\, following the great jazz tradition and warmly welcoming visiting jazz musicians to sit in.

With many highly acclaimed solo albums\, countless awards and accolades\, and over two decades of international touring experience\, Jane has not only been an extremely successful bandleader\, but has had the privilege of making music with some of the greatest musicians\, arrangers\, and producers in jazz. \nDuring her childhood\, Jane studied woodwinds and piano\, spent a decade performing in award winning choirs\, and participated in community theater on Long Island. Throughout all of this\, her focus remained on jazz\, especially interpretation of the Songbook. At the age of 20\, during her senior year at the prestigious Manhattan School Of Music\, Jane placed second in the Thelonious Monk Competition\, now known as the Hancock Competition. This led to an incredible career trajectory\, catapulting Jane into the jazz stratosphere nearly overnight. \nBy 22\, Jane was working with legends such as Tommy Flanagan\, Ron Carter\, and Kenny Barron\, recording her first albums\, and touring the planet. This led to collaborations with jazz luminaries such as Terence Blanchard\, Ivan Lins\, Tom Harrell\, John Pizzarelli\, Christian McBride\, Vince Mendoza\, Jorge Calandrelli\, and many more. Countless television appearances followed\, including David Letterman\, Conan O’Brien\, CBS Sunday Morning\, Good Morning America\, The Tonight Show\, The View\, and many popular international talk shows. Several successful film soundtracks have also included Jane’s music\, including Sky Captain And The World Of Tomorrow and Never Let Me Go. \nAfter more than twenty years\, twelve studio albums and countless recorded guest appearances\, Jane has continued to tour the world nearly nonstop\, including playing iconic venues such as Carnegie Hall\, The Hollywood Bowl\, and headlining at nearly every legendary jazz club on the planet\, most notably NY stalwarts such as the Village Vanguard and Birdland. In addition to touring\, she also writes English lyrics for Ivan Lins\, and uses the knowledge and experience she has gained both at Manhattan School Of Music and on the legendary bandstands of the world to educate and uplift students worldwide. SUMMARY:Snarky Puppy
DESCRIPTION:Snarky Puppy makes their return to the Jorgensen stage! The five-time Grammy® winning collective\, “has always been a band that prioritizes the sound of the music\,” says bandleader and bassist Michael League. Displaying a wide array of influences including funk\, rhythm & blues\, hard rock\, classic soul\, modern gospel\, new tech\, fusion and jazz\, Snarky Puppy isn’t exactly a jazz band\, it’s not a fusion band and it’s definitely not a jam band. It’s probably best to take Nate Chinen of the New York Times’ advice\, as stated in an online discussion about the group\, to “take them for what they are\, rather than judge them for what they’re not.” \n“Our soundscape has expanded dramatically over the years” says League. “When the band started\, we were jazzier\, brainy and music oriented. Moving into the Dallas scene we became groovier\, more emotional\, deeper in a sense. We focused more on communicating a clear message\, understandable to a listener without dumbing things down.” \nIn January 2025 the band collaborated once more with the Metropole Orkest– the Netherlands-based hybrid ensemble renowned for fusing jazz\, classical\, and popular music on a symphonic scale. Captured live over three nights (January 17–19\, 2025) in Utrecht\, the project reunites the two groups a decade after their first joint effort\, Sylva — an orchestral suite released in 2015 that earned the GRAMMY for Best Contemporary Instrumental Album the following year. The result of this collaboration – Somni – will be released November 21\, 2025 via GroundUP Music. \n“It’s by far the most ambitious project we’ve ever done … and it was one of the smoothest records we’ve ever made\,” he says. “Every individual team just absolutely did their job with so much care and love — from the camera operators to our production team.” That spirit was reflected in the room. “The instant feedback was the warmest we’ve ever had. It was encouraging to know that after 22 years of doing what we do\, the music is reaching people.” \nAlways evolving in its musical output\, each new record brings a new vision and progressive direction\, “Our rule is that it can’t sound like it sounded before” comments League\, he continues\, “the music has to feel like it’s moving somewhere.” \nThis also raises the question – where will Snarky Puppy go next? For Snarky Puppy fans\, the answer to this is a very exciting prospect.

SUMMARY:Halie Loren Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special night of jazz with Vocalist Halie Loren and her Quartet! \nHalie Loren – Vocals\nJohn O’Leary – Piano\nWill Slater – Bass\nRick Costa – Drums \nHalie Loren is an international\, award-winning jazz singer/songwriter. She brings a fresh and original perspective to time-honored musical paths\, channeling her innate understanding of connectedness across musical boundaries to forge bonds with diverse audiences in North America\, Asia\, and Europe. Her multi-genre and multi-lingual musical blend across her ten albums to-date has earned several national and international awards in multiple genres as well as significant critical and chart success along the way\, with her albums consistently reaching #1 on the Billboard Japan\, iTunes (Canada and Japan) and Amazon jazz charts. \nAn award-winning songwriter since her early teens\, Halie began garnering international acclaim as a recording artist when her debut jazz album They Oughta Write a Song was named the Best Vocal Jazz Album of the year at the 2009 JPF Independent Music Awards. She was subsequently signed for distribution in Asia by JVC/Victor Entertainment and in North America with Canadian-based jazz label Justin Time Records. Loren’s accolades in more recent years include an Independent Music Award for her original song “Thirsty” in 2011\, a Best Vocal Jazz Album 2012 award in Japan’s Jazz Critique Magazine for her album Heart First\, (which also reached #1 on Canada’s iTunes Jazz chart)\, and a total of four Billboard #1 albums on Japan’s jazz charts since 2013. Her video for “Noah”\, the 2nd single from her 2018 release From the Wild Sky album produced by UK tour-de-force Troy Miller (Amy Winehouse\, Gregory Porter\, Diana Ross)\, won an Emmy in 2019 for Best Music Video as presented by The National Academy Of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) Southeast Chapter. \nAlong with recording and songwriting successes\, Halie’s live performances have brought her around the world several times\, with performances on 4 continents thus far\, including tours across the U.S.\, Canada\, France\, the U.K.\, Japan\, Italy\, Egypt\, China\, Hong Kong\, Taiwan\, South Korea\, Egypt\, and Haiti. Her concerts range from intimate clubs to grand halls to festivals\, from solo to classic jazz trio to lush orchestral collaborations. \nHalie’s newest record\, Dreams Lost and Found\, was recorded in Montreal\, Canada in collaboration with fellow artists from the Justin Time Records family\, and released on April 12\, 2024. This collection of songs explores themes of longing\, seeking\, and seeing with new eyes — the falling away of old illusions and outgrown desires\, finding new visions for love and life\, allowing some dreams to die to make space for new dreams to be born. The album captures the live essence of her music\, that has led to tours and performances for audiences worldwide. The 14-song effort sees Halie lend her take on standards\, originals\, and her personal favorites. \nHalie adds: “This album marks my return to a more jazz-oriented musical sound\, but forged in a completely new environment of creativity (quite literally\, in that I traveled to Montreal to record for the first time) that brought my improvisational spirit to the forefront—in no small part inspired by collaborating with masterful musicians Taurey Butler on piano\, Morgan Moore on bass\, Sam Kirmayer on Guitar\, and Jim Doxas on drums. Though I have performed for years with most of these amazingly talented people\, we’ve never before recorded together… to me\, it was like we were dancing on the edge of the unknown when creating these songs. It felt very alive in the moment\, and I think that comes through the music”
