SUMMARY:New Haven Improvisers Collective presents THE BARRY SEROFF LARGE ENSEMBLE
DESCRIPTION:New Haven Improvisers Collective presents \nTHE BARRY SEROFF LARGE ENSEMBLE \nAnd the premiere of 2 PART INCEPTIONS FOR UNPREPARED IMPROVISERS \nThursday\, November 5th at the Ely Center for Contemporary Art – Doors at 6:30pm \nConnecticut-Based / NYC-Trained Composer and His 12-Piece Ensemble‍‍ Perform Original Works \nOn November 5th the Danbury\, Connecticut composer Barry Seroff returns to New Haven to play alongside his 12-piece orchestra at The Ely Center for Contemporary Art. This all-ages concert will include a performance by The Barry Seroff Large Ensemble and the premiere of 2 Part Inceptions for Unprepared Improvisers\, to be performed by willing participants chosen by chance. Presented by an ensemble fronted by some of the best improvisers of CT and NYC\, Seroff’s Large Ensemble arrangements are settings of the iconic haiku of Edo-Period poet Yosa Buson and the surviving fragments of the pre-Socratic philosopher Empedocles. The Bach inspired 2 Part Inceptions allow space for Seroff’s compositions to be realized through the instincts of improvisers of all styles. \nThe Barry Seroff Large Ensemble is comprised of vocalist Stefan Paolini\, guitarist Bob Gorry\, Chapman Stick player Brett Bottomley\, Keyboardist Tom Schmidt\, woodwinds Elliott Levin and David Aaron\, French Hornist Kyra Sims\, Baritone Hornist Nate Trier\, Violinist Nate Bixby\, Double Bassists Trevor O’Loughlin and Christie Echols\, and drummer Mike Brooks. \nOver the past 15 years\, Seroff has honed his performance skills as the flautist and guitarist in a number of prog rock and jam bands\, including The Accidental Villain\, The Onion Rats\, and the critically acclaimed Edensong. A versatile and virtuosic musician with endless curiosity\, Seroff’s major work\, Democracy\, (available on all streaming services)\, provides ample insight into his cutting-edge approach and abstract sensibilities. This concert expands on the success of Seroff’s Large Ensemble performance in NYC as well as recent major performances overseas. \n“The Large Ensemble pieces explore ancient texts using contemporary improvisational language across both experimental and more traditional means.” says Seroff\, “whereas the Inceptions offer an opportunity for players and audiences to explore intuitive explorations in concepts of music and sound.” \nComposer and multi-instrumentalist Barry Seroff has crafted works performed by Paul Pinto\, Anti-Social Music\, and ThingNY; played extensively with the New Haven Improvisers Ensemble and Unassigned (featuring Ken Schalk of Candiria); and organized the Empathy Is the Cure fundraising concert series. Seroff’s best known work is the long-form Democracy\, a multifaceted\, genre-spanning symphonic examination of the spiritual and philosophical roots of American thought. He currently performs regularly as the flautist for the progressive band Edensong\, whose most recent album\, 2025’s Our Road to Dust\,was called “fullbodied\, unpredictable\, and stunning” by Loudwire. \nABOUT THE ELY CENTER \nThe Ely Center of Contemporary Art (ECOCA) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit dedicated to presenting contemporary art exhibitions and events — challenging\, conceptual\, and provocative — that are inclusive\, diverse\, and promote dialogue around global and community issues. They are a start-up with a 55-year history. What began as the John Slade Ely House\, a New Haven art center established in 1961 by Grace T. Ely\, continues today as ECOCA: an institution rebuilt and sustained by artists and community members because they believe in it. Our board and curatorial committee are entirely volunteer-driven\, supported by one full-time and one part-time staff member and our paid interns. It’s a small engine for a long legacy.
