Early History of Jazz in Hartford, CT
(as reported in The Hartford Courant)

The articles cited below represent a small fraction of the total number of articles that can be found in these time periods (especially 1923 – 1960) -- simply by searching on the word “jazz” will produce thousands of citations. The Hartford Courant is online from 1764 to the present, except for six years (1985 – 1991). Other newspapers that reported on jazz, such as The Hartford Times, are available only on microfilm, if at all. During the 1940s and 1950s, there was a vibrant jazz scene in the north end of Hartford, at such establishments as Club Sundown, the Cotton Club, the Turf Club, the two Elks Clubs, and many others, where Charlie Parker and other jazz luminaries performed. These events relied almost exclusively on word-of-mouth for publicity and, while they were mentioned in the Courant’s society/entertainment columns (by M. Oakley Christoph – later M. Oakley Stafford – from 1938 to 1959), they were not the subject of feature articles. Feature articles were written, however, for jazz events taking place at such larger venues as the Bushnell, the State Theater, Poli’s Palace, etc. For these reasons, a complete picture of the history of jazz in Hartford will have to be discovered and documented through interviews with those very few remaining musicians and jazz aficionados who were fortunate enough to be there when jazz history was being made.

EVERYBODY JAZZES AT COLT PARK DANCE
The Hartford Courant (1887-1922). Hartford, Conn.: Jun 14, 1919. pg. 13, 1 pgs
Several thousand people attended the dance at Colt Park last night, and jazzed to the music of "Whatcha gonna do when the whole blamed world goes dry?" until late in the evening. At least 700 couples were oblivious of everything, of the big new moon climbing over the trees and the stars and everything else except jazz. Colt Park dancing pavilion and jazz are getting more and more popular every night, judging by last night's throng. It was the best night for dancing the park has had this season, as weather and floor were just right, which, as any dancer knows, makes an ideal combination.
One who never believed in jazz before became a whole-hearted convert after attending last night's dance at the park. He looked at the happy bouncing crowd, jazzing rhythmically and realized that jazzing was in the very nature of things. The moon was jazzing up over the trees; and what we've been terming the blinking of the stars all these years has been just jazz.

TO RELOCATE COLT PARK BAND-STAND; Department Moves to Eliminate Protests From Jazz Complaining Residents
The Hartford Courant (1887-1922). Hartford, Conn.: Feb 11, 1922. pg. 6, 1 pgs
To obviate, if possible, complaints which have been made of dance music jazzing from the confines of Colt Park during the summer months, property owners having complained on several occasions, the park department has under consideration a change in the seating arrangements of the orchestra, to be made effective with the beginning of the 1922 season. Instead of being located at the south end of the dance pavilion, the musicians will have space on a bandstand, to be erected in the center of the dance floor, with a canvas top, which, it is expected, will keep the music from following wind courses out of the park. The dance board is popular during the summer. At the close of the 1921 season paid admissions totaled nearly $200,000.

Subjects: Lionel Hampton, Dinah Washington, Rubel Blakely, Arnett Cobbs, Milton Buckner
Excerpt: “ So Sinatra makes them swoon! Well, yesterday at the State Theater Lionel Hampton made them almost pass out cold. From joy! The youngsters went wild. You sat and listened and said, “This won’t get me. I’m past the age of foolery.” So it got you and you yelled, too. Yelled and stomped and were solidly sent. When that band went all out and the individual players got off, each to his own solo bars, well, brother, the crowd (and you) went wild. And can each of those music men get off! Whowie! … I’ve seen it in the Paramount Theater in New York but I never saw it at the State Theater before. I never tried to tear a shingle off myself before. But yesterday was different. And how it was different!”

Subject: Sydney Bechet
Excerpt: If you missed Sydney Bechet at Rocco Matarese’s Circle on the Berlin Turnpike the other night, then don’t miss hearing and seeing him if he ever comes to town again … He plays like a man taken over by the spirit of jazz … His face lights up. His eyes squint … His body twists and turns … He climbs to heaven. And when the tune is over he calmly looks out at the audience and says a meek “Thank you.” He had the crowd in an uproar cheering for more … He had young Johnny Vines, the drummer man, mad with joy, and he had the trombonist, Ed Dougherty, out of this world with admiration.”

Excerpt: “I’m up to my ears in the Bebop development … Now the newest phase of it … A few weeks ago there was only the music … Sharp, discordant chords, absence of tune, and that sort of thing. No one danced to it … Now the new development … They are dancing to it. They are doing what appears to be a combination of the modern dance with jitterbugging thrown in and even a step or two of ballroom stuff … It is so definitely to current music what the modern dance was to dancing … Difficult to accept … Angular … Meaningul … And slow to get into your affection but once there, you love it … Watch the up-and-coming set dance to it differently than they danced to jazz … It is definitely not jazz … Worth watching … It grows on you …”
