DO YOU enjoy jazz music, but would like a deeper understanding so you can converse with other hipsters at the clubs?

ARE YOUR friends or family members avid fans, but you don’t quite understand the appeal of this music?

YOU ALREADY ARE a jazz aficionado but love to hear the stories, traditions and legacy of this American art form.

If you can relate to any of the statements above, join us for Jazz 101. Our instructor Ben Young is a respected jazz historian and veteran radio host at WKCR in New York City.

Because we follow through the lines and themes of the whole music’s development, it is recommended that students engage for the whole of Jazz 101, but each week focuses on a specific chapter of the music’s history.

Instructor Ben Young has been teaching this curriculum and others for 10 years, at JaLC and in several cities of the Northeast. Young’s experience also includes teaching the histories of Jazz and Improvised music on radio for 25 years at New York’s WKCR, and decades of work in the record business—doing research and production for Verve, BMG, and numerous independent labels. Above all, he’s spent his entire adult life engaging directly with musicians, their music, and the first-person narration of what goes on in the art form of Jazz.
