Matt DeChamplain brought his drummer-less trio project to the Paul Brown Monday Night Jazz series on July 27. It was a display of magnificent virtuosity from all three musicians. This format was inspired by the classic trios from Oscar Peterson and Nat King Cole from the late 50’s, early 60’s. The band was tight, and the absence of drums was more than compensated by a percussive like performance from bassist Matt Dwonszyk, and rhythmic chordal exchanges from guitarist Chris Morrison. DeChamplain not only was stellar on the keys, but took the time to educate the listeners in the historical background of the compositions and arrangements.

Above all, the skillfulness of the playing, and the tight ensemble work reigned supreme throughout this performance. The band often traded eights or played extended solos showing off their individual skills as well. Some of the highlights were the Tal Farlow arrangement of Gershwin’s Fascinating Rhythm, DeChamplain’s original composition and touching tribute to the late Don Tremmer (untitled), and the finale, another original StrideBop. On that piece, the bass and guitar drop out leaving Matt DeChamplain to bust loose on an amazing stride piano solo (see video below at  the 1:04:15 minute mark). It was an amazing finish to a fine evening of jazz trio playing.

Next week, August 3rd brings Latin Jazz to the Paul Brown series with the Nelson Bello Group. Go to the PBMNJ web page for all the details.
