SUMMARY:Guillermo Klein Quintet
DESCRIPTION:One of jazz’s most celebrated composer-pianists brings his quintet to The Side Door for a rare and intimate performance \n\n\n\n\nGuillermo Klein – Piano/Vocals \nVinicius Gomes – Guitar \nSebastian De Urquiza – Bass \nRogerio Boccato – Percussion \nRodrigo Recabarren – Drums \nBorn in Buenos Aires and trained at Berklee College of Music\, Argentine pianist and composer Guillermo Klein is one of the most quietly revered figures in contemporary jazz — a musician whose music has earned the devotion of peers and critics alike while defying easy categorization. NPR describes his writing as “an intuitive hybrid of big band jazz\, Argentinean folk rhythms and the modern classical idiom\,” while All About Jazz calls him “an erudite visionary.” Over the past three decades\, some of New York’s most celebrated jazz musicians have sought out the chance to play his challenging and deeply original music. \nKlein spent the 1990s in New York leading his acclaimed 17-piece big band at Smalls and the Jazz Standard\, before scaling the group down to the celebrated ensemble Los Guachos — featuring the likes of Miguel Zenón\, Chris Cheek\, Ben Monder\, and Jeff Ballard — which has maintained a yearly residency at the Village Vanguard since 2007. He has been commissioned by Carnegie Hall\, MIT\, and the Library of Congress\, and his arrangements appear on Miguel Zenón’s Grammy-nominated Alma Adentro. As a composer and arranger he has been described as “the Gil Evans of Argentina” — and like Evans\, his music rewards deep listening with seemingly endless discovery. \nThe Side Door Jazz Club is a dedicated jazz listening room located inside the historic Old Lyme Inn\, 85 Lyme Street\, Old Lyme\, CT. Tickets are reserved seating. Guests dining at the Old Lyme Inn prior to the show receive 10% off their dinner bill.

SUMMARY:Edmar Castañeda Quartet
DESCRIPTION:There is no one in jazz quite like Edmar Castañeda — and he’s bringing his quartet to The Side Door \n\n\n\n\nEdmar Castañeda – Harp \nAndrea Tierra – Vocals \nBirsa Chatterjee – Tenor Saxophone \nJulian Miltenberger – Drums \nColombian-born and New York-based\, Edmar Castañeda has single-handedly redefined what the harp can do in jazz. Playing bass lines\, harmony\, and melody simultaneously on his instrument\, his technique is unlike anything else in music. NPR’s Fresh Air raves that his playing is “the real astonishment — Castañeda juggles lead\, rhythm and bass lines\, using a variety of hard and soft string attacks to keep those voices distinct\, all without giving up the groove.” The New York Times writes that he “engages modern jazz in ways that honor cultural origins\, and has the capacity to astonish by virtue of his fingerstyle technique.” Moses Sumney put it simply: “My brain cracked open when I first saw this.” \nA Latin Grammy nominee and member of BEATrio alongside Béla Fleck and Antonio Sánchez — whose album was nominated for a Grammy for Best Contemporary Instrumental Album — Castañeda has collaborated with Wynton Marsalis\, John Scofield\, Paquito D’Rivera\, Hiromi\, Dave Holland\, Marcus Miller\, Sting\, and Paco de Lucia\, among many others. He was commissioned by Carnegie Hall to write Bordones for string orchestra and EC Llanera Harp\, and by the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra to compose Tres Cordilleras for harp and big band under the direction of Wynton Marsalis. He is the creator of the EC Llanera Harp in collaboration with Camac Harps\, and has released eight acclaimed albums as a leader on his own label. \nJoining him is his wife and longtime collaborator\, vocalist Andrea Tierra\, along with an extraordinary rhythm section. This is a once-in-a-lifetime performance in a 68-seat room — not to be missed.

SUMMARY:Jaleel Shaw Quartet
DESCRIPTION:One of the most celebrated saxophonists of his generation brings his quartet to The Side Door for a night of world-class jazz. \n\n\n\n\nJaleel Shaw – Alto/Soprano Saxophone \nLawrence Fields – Piano \nAlex Claffy – Bass \nNasheet Waits – Drums \nBorn and raised in Philadelphia\, alto saxophonist Jaleel Shaw came up on one of America’s most storied jazz scenes\, immersing himself in the city’s rich musical tradition before earning a full scholarship to Berklee College of Music. He went on to receive his Master’s degree in Jazz Performance from the Manhattan School of Music\, where he was recruited by both the Mingus Big Band and the Count Basie Orchestra while still a student. \nThe New York Times has called him one of the “stewards of a next-generation jazz mainstream that’s inspired\, not constrained\, by timeworn traditions\,” while PostGenre has named him “one of the best saxophonists of his generation.” PopMatters writes that “Shaw’s playing is gorgeous at every turn\, filling any listener with the power of feeling.” He has topped critics and readers polls in both DownBeat and JazzTimes\, winning the 2014 DownBeat Critics Poll for Rising Star Alto Saxophonist — sharing the honor with Phil Woods\, Lee Konitz\, Bunky Green\, and Kenny Garrett. \nA longtime member of the Roy Haynes Quartet — appearing on Haynes’ Grammy-nominated album Whereas — Shaw has also performed alongside Christian McBride\, Dave Holland\, Pat Metheny\, Jason Moran\, Chick Corea\, Robert Glasper\, Roy Hargrove\, Stefon Harris\, and Terri Lyne Carrington\, among many others. He has headlined the Newport Jazz Festival\, North Sea Jazz Festival\, Umbria Jazz Festival\, the Village Vanguard\, Birdland\, Jazz Showcase\, and Blue Note Tokyo\, among countless other prestigious venues around the world. \nAs a leader\, Shaw founded his own label Changu Records in 2008\, releasing a series of internationally acclaimed albums including Optimism (2008)\, The Soundtrack of Things to Come (2013)\, and Echoes (2021)\, which received a four-star review from DownBeat and was inducted into the Library of Congress’ collection of Pandemic Art. His most recent album Painter of the Invisible (2025) has earned widespread critical praise and follows his first-ever appearance as a bandleader at the Newport Jazz Festival in 2024 and his inclusion in Dave Holland’s celebrated 2024 quartet alongside Kris Davis and Nasheet Waits. A recipient of multiple ASCAP Young Jazz Composer Awards and a faculty member at the Manhattan School of Music\, Shaw is as revered in the classroom as he is on the bandstand.

SUMMARY:A Celebration of Elvin Jones: Dear Elvin J.
DESCRIPTION:Drummer Tony Moreno honors his mentor Elvin Jones with new arrangements of his classic repertoire\, performed by a stellar all-star ensemble \n\n\n\n\nTony Moreno – Drums \nTroy Roberts – Tenor Saxophone \nPatrick Cornelius – Alto & Soprano Saxophones \nManuel Valera – Piano \nGene Perla – Bass \nMauricio Herrera – Congas \nElvin Jones is widely regarded as one of the most transformative figures in the history of jazz drumming — a musician whose volcanic energy\, polyrhythmic complexity\, and deeply human swing redefined what was possible behind a drum kit. His recordings with John Coltrane in the early 1960s changed the course of music\, and his own work as a bandleader produced some of the most adventurous and emotionally powerful jazz of the post-bop era. \nTony Moreno’s connection with Elvin began at age eleven\, when his mother brought him to a club down the street where Elvin was performing with his trio featuring bassist Jimmy Garrison and saxophonist Joe Farrell. After the show\, Elvin and his wife Keiko sat with the family\, and the following week Elvin gifted the young Moreno a scratched-up set of Gretsch drums — the very drums he had played on John Coltrane’s Live at Birdlandand Crescent. That same week\, Moreno began a seven-year period of study with Elvin\, spending time at his home talking\, listening to music\, eating dinner\, and watching classic Western films together. “Elvin was my role model\, my mentor\, and my closest friend\,” Moreno reflects. \nFor the Dear Elvin J. Project\, Moreno selected ten compositions from Elvin’s classic repertoire — drawn directly from the landmark Blue Note recording Genesis — and enlisted NYC arranger and composer Rich Shemaria to create new arrangements for this stellar ensemble. The result is a tribute that honors not just the music\, but the spirit and humanity of one of jazz’s most transformative figures. \nThis performance carries special historical weight: bassist Gene Perla is a veteran of Elvin Jones’ own working bands and appears on the original Genesis recording itself — bringing a rare and direct living connection to that historic session to The Side Door stage. Joining him are tenor saxophonist Troy Roberts\, alto and soprano saxophonist Patrick Cornelius\, pianist Manuel Valera\, and percussionist Mauricio Herrera — a group of musicians whose collective depth and artistry are more than equal to the music’s demands.

SUMMARY:The Levin Brothers
DESCRIPTION:Two of music’s most storied careers\, one stage — the Levin Brothers come to The Side Door. \n\n\n\nTony Levin · Bass \nPete Levin · Keys \nPat LaBarbera · Saxophone & Flute \nJeff Siegel · Drums \nTrained in Classical music\, Pete and Tony Levin were also influenced by the 1950’s jazz recordings by bassist Oscar Pettiford. Both were encouraged by high school music faculty to pursue music careers. Pete went to The Juilliard School in New York City\, Tony to The Eastman School of Music in Rochester\, NY. After graduating\, Tony also moved to New York City. By the 1970’s both were active in the New York City music scene. \nStyle-wise\, Tony and Pete have had divergent careers. Their musical paths have crossed many times\, backing other artists and playing in each other’s bands. In the late ‘70s they toured together with Paul Simon. But other than a 1976 recording by their first group – “The Clams” – the Levin Brothers band was their first time developing a project together. \nWhile their 2014 debut album “Levin Brothers” was rooted in ‘50s-era jazz\, over the years they’ve added a lot of eclectic material to the band’s repertoire\, drawing from Classical\, Pop and Prog Rock genres and adapting it to the band’s jazz style. Performances now include compositions by Paul Simon\, Peter Gabriel\, King Crimson\, Ennio Morricone\, Ralph Towner\, Astor Piazzolla and Jimi Hendrix\, as well as originals by Pete and Tony. \nOver the last 10 years the quartet has toured the U.S. and internationally\, releasing 4 more albums. While Woodstock drummer Jeff Siegel has been with them from the beginning\, the 4th member has varied over the years: saxophonist Erik Lawrence\, guitarists David Spinozza and Jeff Ciampa\, flautist Ali Ryerson and saxophonist Ken Gioffre. In 2024-25 they are joined by iconic saxophonist Pat Labarbera. \nTony has become the bass and Chapman Stick voice for Peter Gabriel\, King Crimson and BEAT. He has played on notable recordings for John Lennon\, Pink Floyd\, Lou Reed\, Alice Cooper\, Dire Straits\, Carly Simon\, Judy Collins\, Buddy Rich\, Gary Burton\, Chuck Mangione\, Herbie Mann and many others. He currently records and tours with Peter Gabriel\, King Crimson\, Stick Men and BEAT. \nIn the 1970s\, Pete switched to keyboards\, becoming a synthesizer specialist in the New York City recording studio scene. Over the years\, he has graced hundreds of jazz and pop recordings and performances with artists including Gil Evans\, Jimmy Giuffre\, David Sanborn\, Miles Davis\, Joe Louis Walker\, Annie Lennox\, Jaco Pastorius and Wayne Shorter. He has released 19 solo albums. He currently leads the “Gil Evans Remembered” band\, an 11-piece group made up of alumni of the Gil Evans Orchestra of the 1970’s. \nDrummer/Composer/Educator Jeff Siegel is a veteran of the New York Jazz Scene. A member of Sir Roland Hanna’s Trio from 1994-99\, Jeff has performed and recorded with jazz legends including Ron Carter\, Kenny Burrell\, Jack DeJohnette\, Benny Golson\, Frank Foster\, Helen Merrill and Mose Allison. For many years he was a member of legendary pianist Lee Shaw’s recording and touring trio. He currently tours “The Professors” a jazz group made up of four members of the SUNY music faculty. \nAmerican-born Canadian jazz tenor sax player\, Pat Labarbera is best known as a long-time featured soloist in Buddy Rich’s band and Elvin Jones’ quartet. Pat comes from a musical \nfamily\, sharing jazz history along with his two brothers\, John (Buddy Rich) and Joe (Bill Evans\, Tony Bennett). Pat also played in groups led by Woody Herman\, Louie Bellson and Carlos Santana. Living in Toronto\, Ontario since 1974\, Pat has played a major role in the development of a generation of Canadian saxophonists. Pat joined the Levin Brothers quartet in 2024\, appearing with them for four shows at the Rochester International Jazz Festival.

SUMMARY:Mike Rodriguez Quintet

Alongside his brother\, pianist Robert Rodriguez\, he has recorded five albums as the Rodriguez Brothers — a long-running creative partnership that has earned Grammy nominations and international acclaim. \nAt The Side Door\, Rodriguez brings his own quintet — an intimate format that puts his voice front and center in a room built for exactly this kind of music. \nThe Side Door Jazz Club is a dedicated jazz listening room located inside the historic Old Lyme Inn\, 85 Lyme Street\, Old Lyme\, CT. SUMMARY:Billy Childs Trio
DESCRIPTION:A six-time Grammy winner and one of the most celebrated pianists and composers of his generation comes to The Side Door. \n\n\n\n\nBilly Childs · Piano \nMatt Penman · Bass \nAri Hoenig · Drums \nBilly Childs stands in a category of his own in contemporary jazz. A pianist\, composer\, arranger\, and conductor whose music moves effortlessly between jazz and the classical tradition\, he has garnered six Grammy Awards and seventeen nominations — including back-to-back wins for Best Jazz Instrumental Album for Rebirth (2018) and The Winds of Change (2024). The Guggenheim Foundation\, the Doris Duke Foundation\, and the American Academy of Arts and Letters have all recognized his work. DownBeat simply calls him “one of the foremost American composers of his era.” \nChilds began his career in the late 1970s apprenticing alongside Freddie Hubbard and J.J. Johnson — two of jazz’s all-time giants. Since then he has performed and collaborated with Yo-Yo Ma\, Wynton Marsalis\, Wayne Shorter\, Sting\, Esperanza Spalding\, Dianne Reeves\, the Kronos Quartet\, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic\, among many others. His compositions have been commissioned by the LA Philharmonic\, the Detroit Symphony\, the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra\, and the LA Master Chorale. \nAt The Side Door\, he brings the piano trio format down to its most intimate — just three musicians in a room\, playing at the highest level. This is a rare opportunity to hear one of jazz’s true masters in close quarters. \nThe Side Door Jazz Club is a dedicated jazz listening room located inside the historic Old Lyme Inn\, 85 Lyme Street\, Old Lyme\, CT. Tickets are reserved seating. Guests dining at the Old Lyme Inn restaurant prior to the show receive 10% off their dinner bill.

SUMMARY:Rene McLean Sextet: Tribute to Jackie McLean\, Music of the Spirit
DESCRIPTION:A global musical journey\, a legendary bloodline\, and a sound completely his own — René McLean comes to The Side Door. \n\n\n\n\nRene McLean – Saxophone\, Flute \nJosh Evans – Trumpet \nSteve Davis – Trombone \nHubert Eaves III – Piano \nNat Reeves – Bass \nRonnie Burrage – Drums \nRené McLean‘s story is inseparable from jazz royalty — but his music has always been entirely his own. The son of the legendary alto saxophonist Jackie McLean\, René began his musical training at age nine under his father’s guidance\, and by 16 was already leading his own bands. He went on to study privately with some of the most formidable figures in jazz history\, including Sonny Rollins\, George Coleman\, Barry Harris\, Frank Foster\, and Hubert Laws — a lineage that shaped one of the most wide-ranging musical minds in the contemporary jazz world. \nA true multi-instrumentalist\, McLean moves fluently between alto\, tenor\, and soprano saxophones as well as flute\, ney\, and shakuhachi — instruments that reflect a career spent not just playing jazz but absorbing musical traditions from around the globe. He has performed and recorded alongside Jackie McLean\, Dizzy Gillespie\, Lionel Hampton\, Tito Puente\, Horace Silver\, Woody Shaw\, Hugh Masekela\, Miriam Makeba\, Abbey Lincoln\, Dexter Gordon\, Yusef Lateef\, and Jaco Pastorius\, among many others. \nSince 1985\, McLean has been based in South Africa\, where he has spent decades performing\, teaching\, and researching African musical traditions — bringing that depth of perspective back to every performance. He is currently Professor of African-American Music at the Jackie McLean Institute at The Hartt School in Hartford\, CT\, making this a particularly meaningful homecoming for Connecticut jazz fans.

SUMMARY:Lew Tabackin Trio
DESCRIPTION:One of jazz’s most distinctive voices on two instruments\, Lew Tabackin brings his trio to The Side Door. \n\n\n\n\nLew Tabackin is one of those rare musicians who has built two completely distinct artistic personalities on two instruments. On tenor saxophone\, his playing is forceful and hard-driving — rooted in the tradition of Coleman Hawkins and Ben Webster\, marked by wide intervals\, abrupt shifts in mood\, and an unmistakable sense of conviction. On flute\, he transforms entirely — virtuosic\, delicate\, and deeply informed by the classical tradition and the music of Asia. Critic Scott Yanow put it simply: Tabackin is “one of the few jazz musicians who has been able to develop completely different musical personalities on two instruments.” \nBorn in Philadelphia\, Tabackin studied at the Philadelphia Conservatory of Music before making his way through the New York scene\, working alongside Elvin Jones\, Donald Byrd\, Tal Farlow\, and Chuck Israels. He later served as the principal soloist in the celebrated Toshiko Akiyoshi Jazz Orchestra for three decades\, one of the most acclaimed large ensembles in jazz history. He has also been associated with George Wein’s Newport All-Star Band\, the New York Jazz Giants\, and the Carnegie Hall Jazz Band. In smaller settings\, his trio recordings have drawn praise for their freedom\, intimacy\, and the depth of conversation between the players. \nAt 85 years old\, Tabackin remains one of the most compelling live performers in jazz — this is a rare opportunity to hear a true master up close.

SUMMARY:Ed Fast & Conga Bop
DESCRIPTION:Ten world-class musicians\, one intimate room — Ed Fast & Conga Bop bring their Afro-Cuban jazz to The Side Door. \n\n\n\n\nEd Fast · Drums\nDina DiMarco · Vocals\nSteve Davis · Trombone\nJosh Bruneau · Trumpet\nWayne Escoffery · Tenor Saxophone\nAmy Millan · Piano\nGianni Gardner · Guitar\nMatt Dwonszyk · Bass\nJorge Fuentes · Congas\nAnthony Carrillo · Timbales \nA Hartford Courant favorite and a fixture of the Connecticut jazz scene for over two decades\, Ed Fast & Conga Bop fuse Afro-Cuban rhythms and hard-bop harmony into a sound that is impossible to sit still for. The band grooves through a rich palette of Latin rhythms — rumba\, cha cha cha\, son\, and Afro-Cuban 6/8 — drawing on the music of legends like Cal Tjader\, Tito Puente\, and Hilton Ruiz alongside Fast’s own soulful originals. \nBandleader Ed Fast is a Hartt School-trained multi-instrumentalist equally at home on drums\, timbales\, congas\, and vibraphone. His career has taken him from the pit orchestras of Broadway road shows touring Russia\, China\, Japan\, and South Korea\, to backup bands accompanying Aretha Franklin\, Paul Anka\, and Chita Rivera at Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun\, to the stage of New York’s Iridium Jazz Club. The Hartford Courant called him “a celebrated figure in town” and Latin Beat Magazine has praised the band’s unique sound. \nJoining Fast is an exceptional cast of musicians. Vocalist Dina DiMarco brings an electrifying presence and a wide-ranging repertoire spanning jazz standards and Broadway classics. Trombonist Steve Davis is one of the most recorded and respected voices in jazz\, with credits spanning Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers lineage and dozens of acclaimed recordings as a leader. Tenor saxophonist Wayne Escoffery has established himself as one of the most in-demand voices in contemporary jazz\, with a long association with the Mingus Big Band and Tom Harrell. Rounding out the ensemble are some of the region’s finest rhythm section players and percussionists\, creating the kind of layered\, infectious groove that has made Conga Bop one of New England’s most beloved live acts. \nThis is a big band experience in an intimate room — the kind of night that gets people out of their seats.

SUMMARY:Allison\, Cardenas\, & Nash
DESCRIPTION:Three of New York’s finest bring their acclaimed drummerless trio to The Side Door for a night of intimate\, conversational jazz. \nBen Allison · Bass\nSteve Cardenas · Guitar\nTed Nash · Saxophone \nModeled after the intimate\, drummerless trios of Jimmy Giuffre in the 1950s\, Allison\, Cardenas & Nash have spent over a decade building one of the most distinctive sounds in jazz — deeply conversational\, rooted in blues and folk\, and wide open to wherever the music leads. The trio arrives fresh off the April release of Triological on Sunnyside Records — their most personal album yet\, featuring original compositions from each member for the first time. \nIn a career spanning over 30 years\, Ben Allison has developed an instantly identifiable sound as a bassist\, composer\, producer\, and educator. JazzTimes recognized him as “a visionary composer\, adventurous improviser\, and strong organizational force on the New York City jazz scene.” He founded the Jazz Composers Collective at just 25\, has appeared on over 100 albums\, and composed the theme for NPR’s On the Media\, heard by 1.5 million listeners a week. \nSteve Cardenas began his musical career in Kansas City and has been a fixture of the New York jazz scene since 1995. A longtime member of the Paul Motian Electric Bebop Band\, Charlie Haden Liberation Music Orchestra\, and Steve Swallow Quintet\, he is also a respected educator on faculty at The New School and co-author of the Thelonious Monk Fakebook — the first time all of Monk’s compositions were assembled in a single volume. \nA two-time Grammy Award winner and longtime member of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis\, Ted Nash has had an extraordinary career as a performer\, composer\, and conductor. DownBeat called him “one of the most together saxophonists of his generation.” His 2017 big band album Presidential Suite\, inspired by great political speeches of the 20th century\, earned him two Grammys and the Jazz Journalists Association’s Composer of the Year award. \nThe Side Door Jazz Club is a dedicated jazz listening room located inside the historic Old Lyme Inn\, 85 Lyme Street\, Old Lyme\, CT. SUMMARY:Darryl Yokley Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Grammy-winning saxophonist Darryl Yokley is coming to The Side Door — and this is not one to miss. \nDarryl Yokley- Saxophones\nZaccai Curtis- Piano\nLuques Curtis- Bass\nWayne Smith Jr.- Drums\n\nDarryl Yokley has drawn praise from the New York Times\, Downbeat Magazine\, and beyond for a sound that resists easy labels. Jazz critic Brent Black put it best: Yokley is someone who “side steps standard categorization with ease\,” while Downbeat’s Dave Cantor described him as “nakedly shuttling emotion through his instrument.” However you try to define it\, the consensus is the same — there is no one else who sounds quite like him. \nThe son of an African-American father and a first-generation Mexican mother\, Yokley has woven his multicultural background into a compositional voice all his own. After touring with Motown legends the Four Tops\, the Temptations\, and the O’Jays\, he moved to New York and quickly established himself as both a compelling bandleader and in-demand sideman\, performing at venues including the Kennedy Center and Lincoln Center. He has shared the stage with Eddie Palmieri\, Orrin Evans\, Ralph Peterson Jr.\, and Nasheet Waits\, among many others. \nHis latest album\, Un Mundo en Soledad\, pays homage to Gabriel García Márquez’s beloved masterpiece One Hundred Years of Solitude\, with song titles drawn from passages in the book and ordered according to the story’s chronology. The record landed on multiple Best of 2024 lists and earned Yokley some of the strongest reviews of his career. \nThe Side Door Jazz Club is a dedicated jazz listening room located inside the historic Old Lyme Inn\, 85 Lyme Street\, Old Lyme\, CT. SUMMARY:Halie Loren Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special night of jazz with Vocalist Halie Loren and her Quartet! \nHalie Loren – Vocals\nJohn O’Leary – Piano\nWill Slater – Bass\nRick Costa – Drums \nHalie Loren is an international\, award-winning jazz singer/songwriter. She brings a fresh and original perspective to time-honored musical paths\, channeling her innate understanding of connectedness across musical boundaries to forge bonds with diverse audiences in North America\, Asia\, and Europe. Her multi-genre and multi-lingual musical blend across her ten albums to-date has earned several national and international awards in multiple genres as well as significant critical and chart success along the way\, with her albums consistently reaching #1 on the Billboard Japan\, iTunes (Canada and Japan) and Amazon jazz charts. \nAn award-winning songwriter since her early teens\, Halie began garnering international acclaim as a recording artist when her debut jazz album They Oughta Write a Song was named the Best Vocal Jazz Album of the year at the 2009 JPF Independent Music Awards. She was subsequently signed for distribution in Asia by JVC/Victor Entertainment and in North America with Canadian-based jazz label Justin Time Records. Loren’s accolades in more recent years include an Independent Music Award for her original song “Thirsty” in 2011\, a Best Vocal Jazz Album 2012 award in Japan’s Jazz Critique Magazine for her album Heart First\, (which also reached #1 on Canada’s iTunes Jazz chart)\, and a total of four Billboard #1 albums on Japan’s jazz charts since 2013. Her video for “Noah”\, the 2nd single from her 2018 release From the Wild Sky album produced by UK tour-de-force Troy Miller (Amy Winehouse\, Gregory Porter\, Diana Ross)\, won an Emmy in 2019 for Best Music Video as presented by The National Academy Of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) Southeast Chapter. \nAlong with recording and songwriting successes\, Halie’s live performances have brought her around the world several times\, with performances on 4 continents thus far\, including tours across the U.S.\, Canada\, France\, the U.K.\, Japan\, Italy\, Egypt\, China\, Hong Kong\, Taiwan\, South Korea\, Egypt\, and Haiti. Her concerts range from intimate clubs to grand halls to festivals\, from solo to classic jazz trio to lush orchestral collaborations. \nHalie’s newest record\, Dreams Lost and Found\, was recorded in Montreal\, Canada in collaboration with fellow artists from the Justin Time Records family\, and released on April 12\, 2024. This collection of songs explores themes of longing\, seeking\, and seeing with new eyes — the falling away of old illusions and outgrown desires\, finding new visions for love and life\, allowing some dreams to die to make space for new dreams to be born. The album captures the live essence of her music\, that has led to tours and performances for audiences worldwide. The 14-song effort sees Halie lend her take on standards\, originals\, and her personal favorites. \nHalie adds: “This album marks my return to a more jazz-oriented musical sound\, but forged in a completely new environment of creativity (quite literally\, in that I traveled to Montreal to record for the first time) that brought my improvisational spirit to the forefront—in no small part inspired by collaborating with masterful musicians Taurey Butler on piano\, Morgan Moore on bass\, Sam Kirmayer on Guitar\, and Jim Doxas on drums. Though I have performed for years with most of these amazingly talented people\, we’ve never before recorded together… to me\, it was like we were dancing on the edge of the unknown when creating these songs. It felt very alive in the moment\, and I think that comes through the music”

SUMMARY:The Makanda Project
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special night of jazz with The Makanda Project! \nKurtis Rivers · Saxophone\nSeth Meicht · Saxophone\nSean Berry · Saxophone\nTemidayo Balogun · Saxophone\nCharlie Kohlhase · Saxophone\nJerry Sabatini · Trumpet\nHaneef Nelson · Trumpet\nAlfred Patterson · Trombone\nRichard Harper · Trombone\nBill Lowe · Trombone\nJohn Kordalewski · Piano\nAvery Sharpe · Bass\nYoron Israel · Drums \nThe Makanda Project was started in 2005 as an effort to explore the previously unrecorded compositions of Makanda Ken McIntyre (1931-2001). Twenty years and over 250 performances later\, the 13 musicians in the group are still moved by the challenges and opportunites this music presents. Leader and pianist John Kordalewski\, a former McIntyre student\, has arranged over 60 McIntyre compositions for the group’s 10-member horn section. Especially given that there is no record of Dr. McIntyre having performed these pieces\, the Makanda Project differs from those repertory groups whose function is largely to re-create sounds or styles from the past. Rather\, the McIntyre compositions have been a vehicle for the group to develop its own sound and identity. \nThe Makanda Project has established a presence on the Boston jazz scene through their ongoing series of self-produced free concerts in low-income neighborhoods. These concerts are unique in the Boston area both as a platform for creative music and as community events. They tale place throughout the year and have attracted a large and still-growing following. \nThe band has also collaborated with renowned guest musicians such as Oliver Lake\, Chreles Tolliver\, Chico Freeman\, Ricky Ford\, Feya Faku\, Michael Gregory Jackson\, and Craig Harris\, as well as with poet Askia Toure and dancer/choreographer Mickey Davidson. These collaborations often involve the guests’ compositions. The Makanda Project has also performed at East Coast locations from Washington DC to Maine\, in the Midwest\, and in Europe. This will be their second appearance at the Side Door. \nThe individual members are Kurtis Rivers\, Seth Meicht\, Sean Berry\, Temidayo Balogun\, and Charlie Kohlhase (saxophones)\, Jerry Sabatini and Haneef Nelson (trumpets)\, Alfred Patterson\, Richard Harper\, and Bill Lowe (trombones)\, John Kordalewski (piano)\, Avery Sharpe (bass)\, and Yoron Israel (drums).

It was during these years\, as a quick-witted youngster\, that he had the privilege and honor to study with such percussion luminaries as\, Tommy Lopez Sr.\, “Little Ray” Romero\, Louie Bauza\, and Cachete Maldonado.
