Eight Men Swinging began as a series of sessions to read and perform the music of the Dave Pell Octet. Pell formed his octet in 1953, starting with innovative arrangements by Marty Paich and Shorty Rogers that created a big band sound with guitar augmenting the four horns. Gaining popularity very quickly, other notable arrangers such as Bill Holman, Bob Florence, Andre Previn and John Williams began contributing superb arrangements to the ensemble. After several fits and starts, our current ensemble began meeting in late 2025. Finding a time and rehearsal space, as well as eight musicians willing and able to get the project rolling was no easy task. The members of the octet have performed together for years in a variety of ensembles from duos to 17 piece big bands and everything in between.
