Camille Thurman & Darrell Green Quartet
Thursday March 13 @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm
| $15 – $40“You’re hard-pressed to find rising talents more exciting than Camille Thurman.” —The New York Times
As an accomplished composer, esteemed saxophonist, vocalist, and unique interpreter of the jazz tradition, Camille Thurman is quickly becoming one of the leading standard bearers of the art form.
This New York City native is already breaking records and making history. She is the first woman in thirty years to tour, record, and perform full time internationally with the world-renowned Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra as a saxophonist/woodwind doubler.
Vocally, Thurman elevates any tune with her “soulful inflection” and “remarkable [Ella] Fitzgerald-esque scat prowess” (DownBeat). JazzTimes writes, “When she picks up the sax, it’s another vibe altogether: hearty, gutsy, fervid, sensual.”
From performing alongside jazz icons such as Wynton Marsalis and George Benson, to hitting the stage with pop icons like Chaka Khan, Alicia Keys, and Missy Elliott, Thurman’s star power continues to rise.
Thurman’s international recognition is a testament to the universal appeal of her music and the profound effect she has had on the global jazz community. Thurman is a Jazz in July alum who will be returning to campus not only for her electric performance, but to serve as our Billy Taylor Jazz Artist in Residence, working with UMass and local high school students.
