RHINOCH is a collective trio with three strong voices blending raw, improvisational rhythms with a deep sense of groove. Drawing inspiration from the world of experimental and progressive music, they create a constantly evolving musical landscape of intricate textures and vibrant rhythmic explorations. RHINOCH keeps audiences engaged and pushes the limits of traditional genre definitions.
The Truth Ensemble is led by Bob Gorry and Vance Provey and features an all-star cast of improvisers drawn from around the Northeast. Known for their wide-ranging improvisational approaches, their performance is a unique blend of acoustic and electric sounds, creating an immersive sonic experience with a mix of abstract tonalities, intricate rhythmic interplay, and vibrant harmonic structures.
Bob Gorry leads the New Haven Improvisers Collective and curates the monthly NHIC New Music series. He recently released a new CD with Joe Morris, Down the Rock. Current working bands besides Rhinoch include GoBruCcio, The Roundhouse Quartet, and The Light Upon Blight Ensemble. He curated the Multiplex Music Series with Joe Morris and has performed with Butch Morris, Stephen Haynes, Vance Provey, Allen Lowe, Daniel Levin and many others. Jeff Cedrone is a CT based composer and multi-instrumentalist. He has two records coming out from his projects, Floating Lanterns and The LIght Upon Blight Ensemble. Berkeley trained percussionist Peter Riccio provides endlessly inventive propulsion. Peter is very active in CT music circles for many years on drums and guitar in a variety of styles with his drumming also featured in GoBruCcio and his guitar/vocals/songwriting in the Sawtelles.
Vance Provey‘s approach is rooted in the jazz idiom using strong melodic and rhythmic approaches, but now mostly in a more free improvisatory space. His work with Bill Dixon at Bennington College in The Black Music Division is a guiding influence. New York based Albey Balgochian has played bass with so many, from avant-garde maestro Cecil Taylor to blues legend Paul Rishell, he “lays a foundation solid enough to support a convoy of tanks” -Boston Globe. Diane Buettner played with the likes of Mario Pavone, Joe Fonda, and the Creative Improvisors Orchestra and has become a NHIC fixture. Tor Snyder was a student of Sonny Sharrock and Joe Morris and has been an active professional since the 1980s. Dennis Warren graduated from Bennington where he studied with theorists like the trumpeter/composer Bill Dixon and legendary percussionist Milford Graves. He plays in many groups and has been leading the Full Metal Revolutionary Jazz Ensemble fearlessly into the future. Boston’s Eric Zinman’s piano playing is rooted in the language of the avant-garde, his vision embraces the piano that is first and foremost TOUCH. He studied with Bill Dixon, Ran Blake, Jimmy Gieuffre and George Russell.
