Valentine’s Day is right around the corner, and since February 14th falls on a Wednesday—not the best night for those who have to get up in the morning–Litchfield Jazz has declared Friday, February 16th the official holiday. Everyone knows sweethearts don’t need any more cologne, overpriced roses, or expensive gifts. But what is it they can’t get enough of? Love songs! Who doesn’t need love songs?
So bring your love or friend, if sweethearts are in short supply, and come on down to the Poli Club at the Palace Theater where Hollywood Producer and Grammy-Nominated drummer Richard Baratta and his all-star sextet will make this a special with Music from the Movies.
Rich will be joined by saxophonist Vincent Herring, pianist Bill O’Connell, bassist Michael Goetz, percussionist Paul Rossman, and guitarist Paul Bollenback in a program that includes iconic tunes like the Burt Bacharach-Hal David smash hit Alfie from the 1966 film of the same name, and Pure Imagination from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory by British composers Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley.
Richard Baratta was born into a musical family in Poughkeepsie NY where he started his music journey on saxophone and soon switched to drums. After college, he began studying with Jack DeJohnette and moved to the mecca of jazz, New York City. For a decade he played gigs in and around the city with artists like John Stubblefield Hank Mobley and Johnny Hartman. In the mid-80s when marriage was on the horizon he was looking for more stability than jazz drumming could afford. That’s when his movie production career began. Flash forward, he has been a producer and executive producer for films like the wildly successful Joker, Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman, five Spiderman movies, one Indiana Jones, the Wolf of Wall Street, Big among others. Now years later, he’s returned to jazz always engaging some of the best side men in the business. Along the way, he’s garnered a Grammy nomination.
